HISTORY OF SOLAR PANEL
History of Solar Panel
In 1839 Alexandre Edmond
Becquerel discovered the photovoltaic
effect which explains how electricity can
be generated from sunlight. He claimed
that “shining light on an electrode
submerged in a conductive solution
would create an electric current.”
In 1941, Russell Ohl invented the
solar cell, shortly after the invention of
the transistor.
WHAT IS A SOLAR PANEL ?
What is a Solar Panel ?

- It is an array of several solar cells or

photovoltaic cell.

- It is responsible to collect solar

radiations and transform it to
electrical energy.
Continuation…

- A solar panel is a flat construction

resembling a window, built with
technology that allows it to
passively harvest the heat of the
sun or create electricity from
its energy through photovoltaics.
CONTRUCTION A SOLAR PANEL
Construction a Solar Panel
HOW A SOLAR PANEL WORKS ?
How a Solar Panel Works ?

Light (photons) striking certain

compounds, in particular metals, causes the
surface of the material to emit electrons. Light
striking other compounds causes the material
to accept electrons. It is the combination of
these two compounds that can be made use
of to cause electrons to flow through a
conductor, and thereby create electricity.
Continuation…

This phenomenon is called the

photo-electric effect. Photovoltaic (or PV)
means sunlight converted into a flow of
electrons (electricity).
TYPES OF SOLAR PANEL
Types Of Solar Panel
MONO-Si Panels
Crystal lattice of entire Sample is
Continuous.
Types Of Solar Panel
POLY-Si Panels
Composed of many crystallites of
varying size and orientation
Types Of Solar Panel
Thin Film Solar Panels
- Made by depositing one or more thin
layers (thin film) of photovoltaic
material on a substrate.
- Thin film technology depend upon the
type of material used to dope the
substrate
Continuation…

- Cadmium telluride (CdTe)

- Copper indium gallium selenide

(CIGS)

- Amorphous Silicon (A-Si)

Types Of Solar Panel
Amorphous-Si Panels

Non-crystalline allotrope of
Si with no definite arrangement
of atoms
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF MONO-
SI SOLAR PANELS
ADVANTAGES

- Highest efficiency module till now

with efficiency between 13 to 21%
- Commonly available in the market
- Greater heat resistance
- Acquire small area where be placed
DISADVANTAGES

- More expensive to produce.

- High amount of silicon.
- High embodied energy (total
energy required to produce).
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
OF POLY-Si SOLAR PANEL
ADVANTAGES

- Good efficiency between 14 to

16%.
- Cost effective manufacture.
- Commonly available in the
market.
DISADVANTAGES

- Not as so efficient as Mono-Si.

- Large amount of Si
- High embodied energy.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
OF AMORPHOUS-Si SOLAR PANELS
ADVANTAGES
- Partially shade tolerant
- More effective in hotter climate
- Uses less silicon – Low embodied
energy
- No aluminum frame – low
embodied energy
DISADVANTAGES
- Less efficient with efficiency
between 6 to 12%
- Less popular – harder to replace
- Takes up more space for same
output
- New technology - less prover
reliability
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MONOCRYSTALINE
AND POLYCRYSTALINE
Visible Difference Between the Two

MONO-SI solar cells are dark color

and the corners of the cells are
usually missing.

POLY-SI panels are of dark or light

blue color.
The only difference between the
structure is only due to their
manufacturing process.
