LET’S CONTRAST PRESENT SIMPLE AND PRESENT
CONTINUOUS!

We use Present Simple :


 To talk about general facts.
Peter works in a company in Miami.
 To talk about customs, habits and routines.
Mark usually has breakfast at 7 am.
 To talk about personal characteristics.
Rose likes the city because it is interesting.
 To describe processes.
The truck drives onto the ferry. It drives off the
next day.
LET’S REMEMBER THIS ABOUT PRESENT
CONTINUOUS!

We use Present Continuous :

 To talk about what is happening now


He is driving a car.
 To talk about temporary situations.
It’s difficult to park because they are working
on the road.
 To talk about future plans that are quite
certain.
We are leaving for France tomorrow.

Read the sentences below and identify if they are in
Present Simple or in Present continuous.

Present simple
1. The passengers go from Lima to Miami.

2. The plane is arriving now.

3. The ferry is crossing the river. Present Continuous

Let’s remember how to use Present simple and
Present continuous. Let’s change the following
sentences into negative and interrogative form

The ferry crosses the sea.

The ferry doesn’t cross the sea. simple

The ferry isn’t crossing the sea. Present
Continuos
Is the ferry crossing the sea?

Let’s practice more using Present simple and Present
continuous. Let’s change the following sentences into
negative and interrogative form

The trains arrive on time


Present
The trains don’t arrive on time. simple
Do the trains arrive on time?

The customers are buying products.


The customers aren’t buying products. Present
Continuos
Are the customers buying products?

interrogative form.

The train isn’t leaving now. (negative)
Is the train leaving now? (interrogative)

2. The bus stops at the bus station. (Present simple)


The bus doesn’t stop at the bus station. (negative)
Does the train stop at the bus station? (interrogative)
KEEP IN MIND!!

We do not use some verbs in Present Continuous: like,


know, need, understand, want.

We say:
I know Charles Smith, not I’m knowing Charles Smith.
ON THE LINE

In a conversation with colleagues or talking on the


telephone, we can use expressions for:
 Complaining

 Apologising

 Accepting apologies

 Confirming information
COMPLAINING
You complain when you do not feel satisfied with a
product or a service.
You can use expressions like:

 I would like to complain about …


 I’m calling to complain about … (on the phone)
 I’m phoning to complaina about…
APOLOGISING

You apologise when you can’t do something you promised


or when you do something wrong.

You can use expressions like:

 Please, accept our apoogies for the delay /


inconvenience. (formal)
 We’re (very) sorry about …
 We’re doing everything we can to solve the problem.
 I’m sorry about…
ACCEPTING APOLOGIES
You accept apologies when someone apologises and you
understand that something was wrong

You can use expressions like:

 I accept your apologies (formal)


 That’s all right (less formal)
 No problem. (less formal)
CONFIRMING INFORMATION

You can confirm information using expressions like:

 This is to confirm that…
