SODA GEYSERS
? ?
DOES A SODA GEYSER REQUIRE
DIET COKE AND ORIGINAL
MINT MENTOS?
As an internet sensation, people all over
the world have learned what happens
when you drop Mentos candy into a 2 liter
bottle of Diet Coke.
-But why “Diet” soda and why “Original
Mint” flavor candy?
-Can this work with regular Coca Cola or
with fruit flavored Mentos?
HYPOTHESIS
By introducing a variation of ingredients we will find that only
the “Diet” and “Original Mint” combination will work.

With little to no understanding as to why the famous

geyser occurs with the two well-known products, I
am at a loss as to whether the change or alterations
of the ingredients will have an influence on the
special effect.
My assumption is purely based on the observed
popularity of the original items being paired
together.
Being that you wont find news of any geyser
variations, it makes me believe people have tried
this before me with little or no effect.

PROCESS
1) First conduct a “Control” by which all other test will be compared.
-Place open bottle of Diet Coke on ground
-Stand near bottle to mark geyser height with stick.
-Drop three (3) pieces of “Original Mint Mentos”
into open bottle and enjoy geyser.
-Record height data by having assistant use
measuring tape to measure from
ground to height of stick.

2) Repeat these steps utilizing the

various samples and combinations.

CONCLUSION
Surprisingly “Coke Zero” was more powerful than “Diet Coke”. But between the two
sodas these two drinks out performed the other sodas by far. Regarding use
difference between the “Original Mint” versus the “Fruit”, the findings were
conclusive to be less affective using “Fruit” but not dramatically. The type of soda
used turned out to be more crucial.
I assume the hundreds of YouTube videographers use Diet Coke because that’s
what was available a few years ago when this fun activity started, and now when
someone wants to try this themselves they default to what is most known. Coke
Zero may some day have its day in the sun perhaps as people slowly start to find
out that its more reactive than Diet Coke.
