Transition Design 2

• Traveled Way Widening on Horizontal Curves

- Offtracking
- Design value for traveled way widening
- Application of widening on curve
- Widths for turning roadways at intersections
Turning roadway design elements:

- Offtracking: is the characteristic of all vehicles that the rear wheels do not follow
precisely the same path as the front wheels when they negotiate a horizontal
curve or make a turn

- Traveled way widening on horizontal curves: the traveled way on horizontal

curves is sometimes widened to accommodate curve negotiation.

Turning roadway design:

W = widening of traveled way on curve W Wn

Wc = width of traveled way on curve
Wn = width of traveled way on tangent R
C = lateral clearance per vehicle
U = track width
FA = Width of front overhang
FB = width of rear overhang
Z = width allowance for the difficulty of driving
