Starting From Capacity Planning
• BSC3i 1000/2000 and TCSM3i dimensioning follows the
capacity planning through the created nominal plan
• Capacity planning (for Busy Hour) : How many TRXs are BTS
required for nominal plan?
– Based on expected Erlangs per cell or given traffic profile (e.g.
BTS
erlangs per subscriber and expected amount of subscribers)
BTS
• Traffic per cell can be calculated e.g. using nominal plan
and given traffic profile BTS

BSC3i 1000/2000 and TCSM3i Dimensioning
BSC3i 1000/2000 is dimensioned by following the general rules:
•1 Define the required number of TRXs, BTSs and BCFs
•2 Select the related BSC3i 1000/2000 configuration step – number of BCSUs (maximum Erlang
capacity and possible need for future extensions is taken into account when selecting the
BSC3i 1000/2000 configuration step)
•3 Define the required amount of PCM lines and BSC3i 1000/2000 interface units
•4 Define the required TCSM3i channel capacity and TCSM3i interface units
•5 Define the required amount of PCU2s for PS data

BSC3i 2000 Circuit Switched Traffic Handling Capacity
• The maximum traffic processing capacity of the BSC3i 1000/2000 with Intel Pentium III processors is
11880 Erl with Nokia nominal call mix giving full support to 2000 TRXs
• BSC3i provides flexible support for various call mixes
• Distributed processing capacity in BSC3i ascertains capability to support all various traffic models
• Advanced overload protection mechanisms in BSC3i protects the equipment in extremely high peak traffic
cases
Based on the nominal Nokia call mix below, the Based on the new growth market call mix example

Network Resiliency, TCSM - Ground Rule
“To achieve the highest availability level, a minimum of two TCSM units (possibly
only partly equipped) per BSC is recommended, even if the traffic dimensioning
requires only one” /TCSM2 Product Description/

Resilience with system restart in combined BSC3i/TCSM3i
System restart in the combined BSC3i/TCSM3i master BSC, disconnects the remote BSCs from the core
network until MCMU and Group Switch connections are recovered
• This is because the remote BSCs are connected to TCSM3i trough the master BSC Group Switch by semi
permanent connections
BSC design target is to avoid system restarts, but planned system restarts are typically needed during BSS
SW release upgrades or sometimes with major SW change delivery
• In those cases it takes about 3 minutes to recover remote BSC connections After S12 BSC3i 2000
system restart
Routing remote BSC A-interface trough two or more TCSM3i will ensure service continuity in case of
individual network element unavailability
• Availability > 99.9999 %
For further increasing the end-to-end network reliability, the S12 feature “Multipoint A-Interface” enables
several MSCs to be connected to one BSC
• Availability beyond > 99.9999 %
This kind of network level
redundancy has been
master BSC remote BSC recommended also with
existing TCSM2
