PAINTINGS (2) Mayra Nassef ‘Departure of the Winged Ship’ by Vladimir Kush
This painting reflects the time where butterflies
migrate to different countries (sometimes they would be resting on some decks) and therefore it portrays a great sense of marvel and beauty. Butterflies here are in much larger size than their normal size and therefore it creates that highlight on those beautiful creatures. As a lot of my music video will use overlaid images (either hand-drawn or cut out) having an object/animal being a bigger size than it actually is could portray a surrealistic atmosphere and create a generally more beautiful shot. Dali painted this painting during his time in ‘The Face of War’ by Salvador Dalí California and it reflects the trauma induced by war. Surrealism art itself was spurred especially during war-stricken periods of time and reflected a great need of escape. Here, is probably the most grim painting I’ve ever seen; are faces within the eyes and mouth which also have faces within their eyes and mouth which personally I think symbolically suggests the trauma that is induced watching fatalities and other people suffer in war. The shadow also creates a sinister look created with the terrified face expression that seems to be expressed on a face and the dark tones of the painting. While my music video does not look to emulate this emotion at all, it is important to note the way the feeling is represented and how one can use colours, location and surrealistic elements (especially with eyes) to create meaning.
