MOTORIZED SCISSOR JACK
WITH RACK LOCK
MECHANISM
ABSTRACT
• The conventional method of using rope, ladder, scaffold
and even mechanical scissors jack in getting to a height
encounter a lot of limitation of time and energy
consumption, comfort ability, amount of load that can
be carried etc, which pneumatic scissors lift is set out to
achieve. The project has been tested and it work
successfully. The need for the use of lift is very
paramount and it runs across labs, workshops,
factories, residential/commercial buildings to repair
street lights, fixing of bill boards, electric bulbs etc.
expanded and less-efficient, the engineers may run into
one or more problems when in use.
Need of this Project

• A problem remains a problem until a solution is

proffered. With the limitations encountered in the use
of ropes, ladders, scaffold and mechanical scissors
jacks in getting to elevated height such as the amount
of load to be carried, conformability, time
consumption, much energy expended etc. the idea of
a pneumatically powered scissors jack which will
overcome the above stated limitations is used.
INTRODUCTION

• A scissor jack or mechanism is a device used to extend

or position a platform by mechanical means. The term
“scissor” comes from the mechanic which has folding
supports in criss cross “X” pattern. The extension or
displacement motion is achieved by the application of
force to one or more supports, resulting in an
elongation of the cross pattern. The force applied to
extend the scissors mechanism may by pneumatic,
pneumatic or mechanical. The need for the use of jack
is very paramount and it runs across labs, workshops,
factories, residential/commercial buildings to repair
street lights, fixing of bill boards, electric bulbs etc.
expanded and less-efficient, the engineers may run
into one or more problems when in use
Aim and objective

• The project is aimed at designing and constructing a

pneumatically powered scissors jack to jack and lowers
worker and his working equipment with ease and in the most
economical way. The jack is expected to work with minimal
technical challenges and greater comfort due to its wide range
of application. The device can easily be handled to the site to
be used with a tow-van and then powered by a generator.
Between the heights of jack (i.e. the maximum height) the
device can be used in any height within this range and can be
descend immediately in case of emergency, and can be
operated independent of a second party.
WORKING
• Load lifting need high man power and skilled labour. In order to
avoid all such disadvantages, the motorized jack has been designed
in such a way that it can be used to lift the vehicle very smoothly
without any impact force. The operation is made simple so that
even unskilled labour can use it with ease. The D.C. motor is
coupled with the screw jack by gear arrangement The screw jack
shaft’s rotation depends upon the rotation of D.C motor. This is a
simple type of automation project. This is an era of automation
where it is broadly defined as replacement of manual effort by
mechanical power in all degrees of automation. The operation
remains to be an essential part of the system although with
changing demands on physical input, the degree of mechanization
is increased. We are also proving rack for safety purpose, so jack can
not return it self and lock automatically.

METHODOLOGY

 The methodology is a process for implementation

and developing the project. The goal and the
successfulness of the project is depends on how the
plans is conduct to achieve the result.
 Methodology is to describe the each step to
accomplish the sequence of the flow work from the
beginning until the result is obtained and success.
All the results obtain were evaluated and improved
till the best result came out and to be taken.
 This implementation would be and getting the worst
result where try and error is happens here. Where
any ideal decision may reconsider and repeating to
satisfy the best result.
PROJECT OUTLINE
Phase to process developing and fabricating. Discuss about the theories
review, calculation, project specifications and etc. In order to achieve all this,
the following methods are to be followed closely during the execution of the
project to achieve the objective.
• Study the literature review and analyze what implementation can be made
to this project. Study and analyze all information and data gathered from
various sources and related to with objective of the project. Classify and to
understand the project requirement.
• Experimentation and simulation where certain experiments are needed to
be done in order to collect and to take note the data and record for
improvement.
• Phase to detail design process where concept will be enhanced and
optimized if there is disability and problems to produce the final design.
• Fabrication and implementations happen here where it will be develop and
brought to life from the detail design drawing that have chosen.
• The last process is product realization and verification where it will be send
to presented and enter the competition whether the product achieve the
goals of the project

1: DC Motor
• An DC motor is an electric motor
driven Direct current (DC). The AC
motor commonly consists of two
basic parts, an outside stationary
stator having coils supplied with
alternating current to produce a
rotating magnetic field, and an inside
rotor attached to the output shaft
producing a second rotating magnetic
field. The rotor magnetic field may be • Less commonly, linear AC motors operate on similar
produced by permanent magnets, principles as rotating motors but have their
reluctance saliency, or DC or AC stationary and moving parts arranged in a straight
electrical windings. line configuration, producing linear motion instead
of rotation
• We are using 12 V DC 0.5 HP motor for our project.
2: LEAD SCREW
• A lead screw also known
as a power screw or
translation screw, is a
screw used as a linkage in
a machine, to translate
turning motion into linear
motion. Because of the
large area of sliding
contact between their
male and female
members, screw threads
have larger frictional
energy losses compared to
other linkages.
3: SCISSOR ARM
• this component is subjected to buckling load
and bending load tending to break or cause
bending of the components. Hence based on
strength, stiffness, plasticity an hardness. A
recommended material is stainless steel.
4: RACK AND LOCK
• A rack and pinion is a type of linear actuator that comprises a
pair of gears which convert rotational motion into linear motion.
A circular gear called "the pinion" engages teeth on a linear
"gear" bar called "the rack"; rotational motion applied to the
pinion causes the rack to move relative to the pinion, thereby
translating the rotational motion of the pinion into linear
motion.
5: Battery
• In order to choose the most convenient 12V
battery. The characteristics that were taken into
consideration in this decision were: price, amp
hours, size, weight and energy density.
• A rechargeable battery, storage battery,
secondary cell, or accumulator is a type of
electrical battery which can be charged,
discharged into a load, and recharged many
times, while a non-rechargeable or primary
battery is supplied fully charged, and discarded
once discharged.
6: Structure
• Our whole project will be set on the structure only.
This is the main part of the project
A machine structure is a fixed constructed object
which functions as part of some mechanized
process or which performs mechanized processes
independently. The various types of machine
structures may differ vastly from each other in
appearance. These do not include structures built
to shelter or enclose machinery; the machinery
must be inextricably linked to the structure's form

CONCLUSION
• The main task for us is to study process and learning
the manufacturing in practical way. The design and
construction of a pneumatic scissors lift is to lift a
worker together with the working equipment
comfortably and safely to a required working height
not easily accessible. It may be used without a
necessary external assistance or assistance from a
second party due to the concept of the design. This
project will be an important engineering tool or device
used in maintenance jobs. Changing of street lights,
painting of high buildings and walls around the school
environment.
