• Familial kinship vs Individualism: Pakistan has a culture of
familial kinship where the fundamental unit in the society is a
family including mother-father-sons-daughters. In the USA
fundamental unit in a society is individual.
• Burger as a symbol of westernised value: Burger is
considered a symbol of western cultural values. It is
associated with the USA and its modern-western values of
individualism.
Public Diplomacy and Education
• The US is funding an English language education
programme for underprivileged students in Pakistan. Other
programmes included university-level linkages and cultural
exchanges such as US jazz musicians’ visit to Lahore.
• Fulbright graduate scholarship programme for Pakistan as
an example of public diplomacy initiatives to improve
people-to-people relations.
• Funded by the U.S. Department of State, the YES scholarship
is not only for young people like Anwar to help dispel myths
about Muslim-majority countries but for them to learn more
about the United States.
