A skin marking pencil

A wooden spatula
An otoscope
 A skin marking pencil is for marking areas usually
before an operation. Varicose veins are marked
because the veins “collapse” (they are difficult to see)
when the patient is anaesthetised.
 A wooden spatula can be used as a tongue depressor or
for applying creams or lubricant
 An otoscope is an instrument used for examining the
ear and for seeing the tympanic membrance.
A stethoscope
 A stethoscope is used for listening to heart sounds or a
pulse – the heartbeat
A torch
Forceps
A sphygmomanometer
 A torch is used mainly for seeing in the dark! A
smaller ‘pencil’ torch is used for doing neurological
observations, for checking the reaction of the eyes to
light stimulus and also for looking at the mouth and
throat.
 A sphygmomanometer is used for taking blood
pressure.
 Forceps are generally used for picking up something
or holding things when using a ‘no-touch’ sterile
technique
A urinometer
Blades
A percussion hammer
 Blades are used for cutting. Scalpel blades
are packaged individually and attached to a
handle.
 Urinometer is used for measuring the pH of
urine.
 A percussion hammer is used for testing
reflexes.
An ophthalmoscope
Digital blood pressure monitor
Blood pressure cuff
scales
 An ophthalmoscope is an instrument with a concave
mirror and a lens for examining the interior of the eye
through the pupil.
 Scales is used to check weigh a patient
 blood pressure cuff is used to wrap around a patient’s
arm to take blood pressure
 digital blood pressure monitor is used to take a
patient’s blood pressure
A vaginal speculum
A kidney dish
 A vaginal speculum is used for widening the vaginal
passage for examination or biopsy of the cervix
 A kidney dish (cardboard) is used as a disposable
vomit bowl or container to carry things. A metal
kidney dish or bowl can be sterilised and used for
instruments such as scissors and forceps when doing a
sterile procedure
 A paper towel may be sterile or non-sterile and is
multi-purpose – a cover, a towel, a sterile wrapping, etc
sterile rubber gloves
A scalpel handle
Pulse oximeter
A thermometer
A tympanic thermometer
 Sterile rubber gloves are used for doing any sterile
procedure and by all the staff in the operating
theatres.
 A thermometer is used for measuring body
temperature. This may be taken orally, in the axilla or
in the rectum.
 A scalpel handle is used to connect a sharp blade,
forming a knife for cutting delicate tissue.
 A tympanic thermometer is used to take a patient’s
temperature
 Pulse oximeter is used to records patient’s blood
oxygen saturation
