THE NATUTE OF

CLIMATE CHANGE AND

ITS CAUSES
CLIMATE CHANGE

It is the significant change in the

climate conditions and measures that
usually lasts for an extended period of time.
It involves major changes in the
temperature, precipitation or, wind patterns
that can occur over a particular length of
time.
GLOBAL WARMING

Is caused by an ongoing rise in global

average temperature near Earth's surface. It is
due to increasing concentrations of greenhouse
gases in the atmosphere. global warming
causes changes in climate patterns. It
represent an aspect of climate change.
CAUSES OF CLIMATE CHANGE
GREENHOUSE EFFECT

When sunlight reaches surface

of the Earth, it can either reflect the
light back into the space or it can
be absorbed by the Earth.
GASES THAT CONTRIBUTE TO THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT ARE THE FF:

1. WATER VAPOR (H2O)

- considered as the most abundant greenhouse gas. It
usually increases as the Earth's atmosphere warms.
2. CARBON DIOXIDE (CO2)
-is the principal greenhouse gas that contributes to climate
change.
3. METHANE (CH4)
-hydrocarbon gas produced by natural sources and human
activities which includes the decomposition of wastes in
landfills, rice cultivation and domestic livestock manure
management.
4. NITROUS OXIDE (N2O)
-a powerful greenhouse gas produced due to soil cultivation
practices, especially the use of commercial and organic
fertilizers, fossil fuel combustion, nitric acid production and
biomass burning.
5. CHLOROFLUOROCARBONS (CFCs)
6. SULFUR HEXAFLUORIDE (SF6)
- it has a long atmospheric lifetime, and emissions of these
can affect the climate for a long period of time.
GLOBAL GREENHOUSE EMISSIONS
GREENHOUSE GAS PERCENTAGE OF EMISSION

Carbon Dioxide (Fossil fuel and 65%

Industrial processes)
Methane 16%

Carbon Dioxide (Forestry and other land 11%

use)
Nitrous Oxide 6%

F-gases 2%
ACTIVITIES THAT EMIT DANGEROUS GREENHOUSE GASES

Sourcing energy from coal-fired

power plants and other fossil fuels.
The 2012-2030 Philippine Energy Plan
also promotes fossil fuels exploration.
The DOE has proposed 16 sedimentary
basins in the country that have a
combined potential of 4,777 million
barrels of fuel oil equivalent for
exploration

USING OUR APPLIANCES

Cultivating Rice. Growing rice in
flooded fields requires organic
fertilizers,which emit methane when
they decompose.
Growing livestock. Ruminant
animals like cows and goats produce
methane when they digest food.
Large-scale of chemical
agriculture. This uses massive
amounts of pesticides and chemical
fertilizers.
Using cars instead of mass
transportation. The country has too
many vehicles on the road but reliable
modes of mass transportation, as well
as infrastructure and facilities. Latest
data shows there are 7.4 million
vehichles plying Philippine roads and
only 15 running trains that carry up to
650,000 passengers every day.
Clearing forests for
plantation.

Illegal logging.
Mineral production.

Metal production.
Throwing waste in open dumps and
in landfills. This is largely a result of
centralized method of waste
management in the country. When
organic material in waste decomposes,
it emits methane , a potent greenhouse
gas.

Burning trash. When waste

management fails, sometimes with no
garbage collection to begin with,
individuals resort to burning their trash,
which emits carbon dioxide.
