• In 1914, the United States remained

American ships.
• On April 2, 1917 Woodrow Wilson
called for a declaration of war
against Germany.
Gallipoli Campaign

• The Allies attempted to score a victory against


the Ottoman Empire.
• In January 1916 Allied forces were staged a
full retreat, after suffering 250,000 casualties.
Battle of the
Isonzo • The First Battle of the Isonzo took place in
1915, soon after Italy's entrance into the
war on the Allied side.
• After the Twelfth Battle, Italy's allies
jumped in to offer increased assistance.
World War I at Sea
• The superiority of Britain’s Royal Navy
was unreached by any other nation, but
the Imperial German Navy had got close
to the naval power with their U-boat
submarines.
Second Battle
of the Marne
• On July 15, 1918, German troops launched
what would become the last German
offensive of the war, attacking French forces
but they were defeated again.
• The Allies, who were able to regain much of
France and Belgium in the next months.

Legacy of World War I
• It took the lives of more than 9 million soldiers
• Contributed to the fall of four venerable imperial dynasties: Germany,
Austria-Hungary, Russia and Turkey.
• Many of the technologies we now associate with military conflict were
introduced on a massive scale during World War I.
