A SHAPER MACHINE

• Shaper is Machine tool which produces flat surfaces in horizontal,

vertical or inclined planes depending upon the orientation of the
cutting tool.
FEATURES
In shaping machine the ram moves the cutting tool is
backward and forward direction in a straight line.
Forward motion is called cutting stroke and backward motion
is called is called return stroke.
 no cutting during return stroke.
 it can also produce concave and convex surface.
PARTS OF A CRANKSHAPER

 Base
 Column
 Table
 Cross Rail
 Ram
 Tool head
SHAPER MECHANISM
OPERATION ON SHAPER:-

Basic operation on shaping machine can be classified as-

 Horizontal cutting
 vertical cutting
 Inclined cutting
 Grooved
 Slotted
 Stepped
TYPES OF SHAPER MACHINE:-
1. The Acc. to the ram driving
mechanism
 Crank shaper
 Geared shaper
 Hydraulic shaper
2. Acc to the position & travel of ram
 Horizontal shaper
 Vertical shaper
3. Acc to the direction of cutting stroke
 Push Type shaper
 Draw type shaper
4. Acc to the design of the table
 Standard shaper
 Universal shaper
SPECIFICATION OF SHAPER:-

 Maximum ram stroke= 700mm

 Maximum tool overhang =840mm
 Max. distance b/w table surface and ram = 400mm
 Min. distance b/w table surface and ram = 80mm
 Dimension of table working surface = 700×450mm
 Max. horizontal travel of table=700mm
 Max. vertical travel of table= 320mm
 Motor power = 7kw
 horizontal feed = 0.25-5mm
 Overall dimension= 2780 ×1750×1780mm
SHAPING TIME ESTIMATION

L: length of stroke in meters

N: number of stroke per minutes

Distance moved by the shaper

tool per mnt. =LN

 Cutting stroke/return
stroke=3/2

 Cutting time/total
time=3/5
 Cutting speed=(5/3)LN

 total no. of stroke required to complete a job(St)=W/F

(where W=width of the workpiece)

L=length of stroke
Vo=cutting speed in m/min
Vr=return speed in m/min
f =feed per cycle in m.

 cutting stroke(to)=L/Vo
 return stroke(tr) =L/Vr
 number of cycles = W/f
 total time for one cycle(T)=to+tr
MACHINING TIME(Tm)=NO.OF CYCLE×TIME PER CYCLE
Tm=(W/f).T
