SCS METHOD: Shoring, Clearing and Stripping

Use of Post Head as permanent shoring

SCS involves an intermediate operation

known as clearing which consist of
removing formwork and over half of the
slab supporting shores a few days after
pouring. The operation considerably
reduces the materials required for
formwork. (Alvarado YA, et al. A numerical study
into the evolution of loads on shores and slabs
during construction of multi-storey buildings.
Comparison of partial striking with other techniques ,
2010)
Note: Spacing of post head should be less than 3m
Next Floor Level 2
Casting of level 1 t = 1 days (rebar & formwork column)
t = 0 days t = 2 days (pouring column)
t = 3 days (strip beam sides)
Next Floor Level 2
Clearing of level 1 t = 5 days (install plasform & scaffold)
t = 4 days t = 6 days (install rebar & mep)
t = 7 days (install rebar & mep)

Note:
At an age of 5 days, the slab was able to support its self weight plus construction load
(Alvarado YA, et al. An experimental study into the evolution of loads on shores and slabs during construction of multi-
storey buildings using partial striking , 2009)

The post head with shoring jack prevents the early aged concrete to deflect when Plasform /
phenolic, joist, waler and scaffold are remove.
Next Floor Level 3
Casting of level 2 t = 9 days (rebar & formwork column)
t = 8 days t = 10 days (pouring column)
t = 11 days (strip beam sides)
Next Floor Level 3
Clearing of level 2 t = 13 days (install plasform & scaffold)
t = 12 days t = 14 days (install rebar & mep)
t = 15 days (install rebar & mep)
Casting of level 3 Next Floor Level 4
t = 17 days (rebar & formwork column)
t = 16 days t = 18 days (pouring column)
t = 19 days (strip beam sides)
Next Floor Level 4
Clearing of level 3 t = 21 days (install plasform / phenolic)
t = 20 days t = 22 days (install rebar & mep)
t = 23 days (install rebar & mep)

Partial clearing of level 3

Full clearing of level 1

Casting of level 4 Next Floor Level 5
t = 25 days (rebar & formwork column)
t = 24 days t = 26 days (pouring column)
t = 27 days (strip beam sides)
Conventional Partial Striking
2 floor supply of Scaffold Support 1 floor supply of Scaffold Support
2 floor supply of Aluma Beam joist/waler 1 floor supply of Aluma Beam joist/waler
2 floor supply of Phenolic Board 1 floor supply Plasform
2 ½ floor supply Post Head and Shoring Jack

Advantages
• Plasform is expensive for initial cost however cheaper in the long run compared to Phenolic
• Post head with shoring jack is cheaper than Scaffold with u-head, base jack and aluma beams
• Can achieve 8 days cycle per floor

Dis - Advantages
• Need coordination and approval of structural designer
• Workers-Subcon not familiar with the method (Learning Curve Period)
• Proper and strict implementation at site, especially the stripping and transfer of formwork.
