 Effectiveness: A measure of the appropriateness of


the goals chosen (are these the right goals?), and
the degree to which they are achieved.
INTRODUCTION

 One of the most important human activities is managing.

 Managing has been essential to ensure the coordination of

individual efforts.

 Task of managers has been rising in importance.

 The term management is used in three alternative ways:

• Management as a discipline,

• Management as a group of people, and

• Management as a process.

• F.W. Taylor -“Art of knowing what you want to do and then
seeing that it is done the best and cheapest way”.

• Henry Fayol –“To Manage is to forecast, to plan, to


organise, to command, to co-ordinate and to control”.

• Peter F.Drucker –”Management is work and as such it has


its own skills, its own tools and its own techniques”.

• “Management is the art of getting things done through


and with people”.

 The process of achieving organizational goals


through planning, organizing, leading and
controlling the human, physical, financial, and
information resources of the organization in an
effective and efficient manner.
 Manager: someone who participates in the
management process by planning, organizing,
leading or controlling the organization’s
resources.

 In the organization, no one can achieve
organizational goals alone. Management involves
working with and through other people.
 Over the years, many management principles
have been scientifically codified for study and
application.
 People fully develop their management skills
without applying some creative talents.

 Frederick Smith, the founder and chief executive
officer of Federal Express, used his management
skills to build a tiny start-up into the largest
overnight package delivery service in the United
States.
 On its first day of operation in 1973, Federal
Express shipped only a handful of packages.
Today, the firm serves 1.3 million customers daily
and strives to reach Smith’s goal of 100 percent
on time performance in every delivery.

together in a consciously structured setting to
achieve group goals.
 Schools, religious, Institutions, stores, hospitals,
banks, camps, clubs are organizations.
 Government, Private, or devoted to improving
society.
Organizations categorized

 Profit organizations and Non Profit Organizations.


 Manufacturing and service organizations.
 Private sector and public sector
