INTRODUCTION

Solar energy is radiant light and heat from the

Sun that is harnessed using a range of ever-
evolving technologies such as solar heating,
photovoltaics, solar thermal energy, solar
architecture, molten salt power plants and
artificial photosynthesis. The large magnitude of
solar energy available makes it a highly
appealing source of electricity.
New technologies shaping the future of solar
power
Bio-solar cells
For the first time ever, researchers
connected nine biological-solar (bio-
solar) cells into a bio-solar panel and
continuously produced electricity
from the panel and generated the
most wattage of any existing small-
scale bio-solar cells. Once a
functional bio-solar panel becomes
available, it could become a
permanent power source for
supplying long-term power for
small, wireless telemetry systems as
well as wireless sensors used at
remote sites where frequent battery
replacement is impractical.
Concentrated PV cells

Researchers have found a way to make concentrated PV cells

that are more efficient in converting the sun’s energy into
electricity. The principle behind concentrated PV cells is to use
a large lens to focus light onto a relatively small piece of PV
semiconductor material. The benefit is that only a fraction of
the semiconductor material is used, thereby reducing costs.
Solar energy harvesting trees
Researchers in Finland have used solar and 3D printing technologies
to develop prototypes of what they have christened as “energy
harvesting trees”. The tiny leaves generate and store solar energy
and can be used to power small appliances and mobile devices. They
flourish indoors and outdoors and can also harvest kinetic energy
from wind and temperature changes in the surrounding environment.
Floating panels, floating solar farms

Floating PV system allows standard PV panels to be installed

on large bodies of water such as drinking water reservoirs,
quarry lakes, irrigation canals, remediation and tailing ponds,
and hydroelectric dam reservoirs. It is also eco-friendly, fully
recyclable, has low environmental impact and is cost-effective.
USE OF SOLAR ENERGY IN SOLAR VEHICLE

 WHAT IS SOLAR VEHICLE ?

A solar vehicle is an electric vehicle powered completely or
significantly by direct solar energy. Usually, photovoltaic (PV)
cells contained in solar panels convert the sun's energy
directly into electric energy.
 SOLAR VEHICLE CONSISTS OF ?

Solar array, Power trackers, Electric motor, Speed controller,

Chassis, Battery, Wheel
 SOLAR CAR

Solar cars depend on PV cells to convert sunlight into

electricity to drive electric motors. Unlike solar thermal
energy which converts solar energy to heat, PV cells directly
convert sunlight into electricity.
 SOLAR BUS

Solar buses are propelled by solar energy, all or part of which

is collected from stationary solar panel installations. Bus
services which use electric buses that are partially powered
by solar panels installed on the bus roof, intended to reduce
energy consumption and to prolong the life cycle of the
rechargeable battery of the electric bus.
 SOLAR TRAINS

Solar Train concluded that the most interest for Photo Voltaic
in rail transport was on freight cars where on board electrical
power would allow new functionality.

•GPS or other positioning devices, so as to improve its use in

fleet management and efficiency.

•Electric locks, a video monitor and remote control system

for cars with sliding doors, so as to reduce the risk of robbery
for valuable goods.

•ABS brakes, which would raise the maximum velocity of

freight cars to 160 km/h, improving productivity.
 SOLAR BOATS

Solar powered boats have mainly been limited to rivers and

canals, but in 2007 an experimental 14m boat, the Sun21
sailed the Atlantic from Seville to Miami, and from there to
New York. It was the first crossing of the Atlantic powered
only by solar.
 SOLAR AIRCRAFTS

Solar ships can refer to solar powered airships or hybrid

airships.
There is considerable military interest in unmanned aerial
vehicles (UAVs); solar power would enable these to stay aloft
for months, becoming a much cheaper means of doing some
tasks done today by satellites. In September 2007, the first
successful flight for 48h under constant power of a UAV was
reported. This is likely to be the first commercial use for
photovoltaic's in flight.
FUTURE PROJECT ON SOLAR AIRCRAFT

•Sky-Sailor (aimed at Martian flight)

•various solar airship projects, such as Lockheed Martin's

"High Altitude Airship"
USES OF SOLAR ENERGY IN
ELECTRONICS FIELD
Solar Powered LED Street light with intensity
control:
LED based street lights owing to their high
efficiency and ease of intensity control are now
frequently replacing the conventional HID
based street lamps. This project defines a LED
based light system which is power from a solar
power source and their intensity can be
controlled such that they are switched on with
maximum intensity only during the peak
hours. The output from solar panels is stored
during day time, in batteries and at night this
battery is use to power the LEDs.
Sun Tracking solar Panel:
• This system defines a way for
mounting of solar panels so as to
receive maximum radiation from the
sun.
• Solar panel always oriented at 90
degrees to receive the maximum
sunlight.
• The microcontroller is programmed
so as to provide signals to the driver
IC such that the motor gets a
rotation 0 to 180 degrees at every
equal interval to track the sunlight.
• The stepper motor is given 90
degree rotation so as to receive the
maximum light.
Solar Power Charge Controller:
• One of the essential parts of a
solar power system is the
charge controller .
• In solar power system , the
solar energy collected by the
panels is stored in batteries in
order to be used at night times.
• DC power is converted to AC
power using inverters.
• A system is designed to attain
the control of charging of the
battery.
Solar Powered Auto Irrigation System:
• Irrigation is artificial supply
of water to areas with scant
rainfall or water supply.
• It is often required to
control the supply of water
by sensing the moisture
content in the soil.
• To overcome the frequently
unavailability of mains
supply and controlling the
switching of the pump
motor based on the sensor
input which senses input
which senses the moisture
content in the soil.
Solar Energy Measurement system:

• This system is used to monitor

different parameters related to
the solar panel.
• Like temperature, light
intensity, voltage and current
and display the parameters on
a LCD display.
• The output from the sensors
are fed to the input pins of the
PIC microcontroller with
inbuilt 8-channels being used.
• The output from the sensors is
then accordingly displayed on
the LCD display in digital
form.
Conclusion:
• Solar power is big part of our lives and will become a huge
part of our future.
• Solar energy is beneficial in many ways. It is reliable,
resourceful, silent, renewable, and clean.
• We can use solar power for many things such as cooking.
we hardness solar energy by using photovoltaic(solar) cells.
• We can save lots of money and lower our power bills with
solar power.
• Your location will effect the benefits of solar panels. If you
house gets lots of sun you will be able to produce more
power and save more money.
