What is RFID?
Radio Frequency Identification

RFID is an AIDC(Automatic Identification and Data Capture) t

echnology that uses radio frequency waves to transfer data betw
een a reader and electronic (RFID) tag attached to an object , for
the purpose of identification and tracking.

 For object identification BARCODE technology will also be us
ed. But RFID technology is better.
 The bar code is a line-of-sight technology . That is a scanner ha
s to “see’ the bar code to read it , which means people usually h
ave to orient the bar code toward a scanner for it to be read.
 RFID does not require line of sight . RFID tags can be read as l
ong as they are within range of reader.

RFID tags contain at least three parts: an integrated circuit that
stores and processes information and that modulates and demodul
ates radio frequency (RF) signals

RFID Readers:
Types of Readers
•A Passive Reader Active Tag (PRAT) system has a passive reade
r which only receives radio signals from active tags
•An Active Reader Passive Tag (ARPT) system has an active read
er, which transmits interrogator signals and also receives authenti
cation replies from passive tags.
