WHAT IS A GROUP?

 A collection of individuals who have


 regular contact
 frequent interaction
 mutual influence
 common feeling of camaraderie
 they may work together to achieve a common set of goals
WHAT IS A TEAM?

 It may have multiple meanings based on the context

 A group of players forming one side in a competitive game or sport

 A group of people with the same skill and using those skills to achieve the
same goal/s

 A team is a group of people who are interdependent with respect to


information, resources, and skills and who seek to combine their efforts to
achieve a common goal

 A team is a group of individuals working together to achieve their goal

 Teams are essential factor in the business and organizational environment

 A carefully selected team joins well-informed individuals into a group


setting to complete an important task

 The individuals are selected for their product knowledge, as well their skills,
reasoning and leadership abilities

 In a business setting most work is accomplished by teams of individuals.

 Because of this, it is important for employees to have the skills necessary to


work effectively with others

 Teams are used to accomplish tasks that are too large or complex to be
done by an individual or that require a diverse set of skills and expertise

 The success of the company does not depend on one man

ROLE OF TEAMS IN ORGANIZATIONS

ADAPTABILITY
 Organizations must be able to adapt to rapid and perpetual rise of
technology while maintaining or even exceeding productivity

 The team assists the organization in managing its change while introducing
innovative ideas

 Common organizational teams include change management teams and


quality assurance teams

STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT
 To achieve organization success, multiple strategies must be implemented
simultaneously regarding certain agendas of the organization

 Along with direct actions, teams are often responsible for updating
executives on the strategy evolution and providing recommendations and
resolutions

 To promote competitive advantage of a company

LEADERSHIP
 Members of the team should be able to lead the organization towards
success in a specific or designated area

 These teams serve as supporters, trailblazers and teachers within the


organization
TYPES OF TEAMS
Types of Teams

WORKING TEAM
 consists of the same members of a department, such as a sales team, a
marketing team and a finance team
 also known as a functional work team, this type of team is fundamental to any
growing business
 the leader is usually assigned by default; the person with the highest level of
authority also leads a working team. Of all the types of teams, this one is often
the most cohesive

SELF-DIRECTED TEAM
 consists of volunteers who meet over a shared goal
 unlike a working team, a self-managed team does not have a leader;
team members share responsibility, though it may not be equal

MANAGEMENT TEAM
 consists of department leaders
 usually they are the ones who lead or control what is happening in the
organization
 decision-making

PROJECT TEAM
 consists of members of multiple company departments
 also known as a special purpose or task force team
 they are called together to plan an event, such as the annual holiday
party, or solve a looming workplace issue, such as the rising cost of
health care benefits

MULTI-FUNCTIONAL TEAM
 consists of members from different departments or areas of a company
 but unlike a project team, the mission of the members tends to be more
long-term in nature
 this “standing team” may be charged with ongoing issues such as
sustainability, technology or governmental relations
 A diligent and dynamic multi-functional team can infuse a small
business with creative and innovative ideas
