Engineering mechanics

Definition
• Branch of applied science which deals with
the behaviour of a body with the state of rest
or motion , under the action of forces
Why engineering mechanics ?
• Analysing the force applied over the structure
• Design and construction
Division
• 1. statics: It is that branch of Engineering Mechanics,
which deals with the forces and their effects, while
acting upon the bodies at rest.
• 2. dynamics : It is that branch of Engineering
Mechanics, which deals with the forces and their
effects, while acting upon the bodies in motion.
• Kinematics : It is that branch of Dynamics, which deals with the
bodies in motion, without any reference to the forces which are
responsible for the motion.
• Kinetics: It is the branch of Dynamics, which deals with the bodies in
motion due to the application of forces.
Pre requisite
• Defining the structure , environment
• Defining the force
• Studying the force
• Dimensions or units
Basic concepts
• Particle : the least possible amount, it is a body whose space and
dimension are considered as negligible. Mass is considered at a point
• Rigid body : body which does not deform under the action of forces
• Matter : it is substance which occupies a space
• Mass : the quantity of matter possessed by a body is called mass
• Weight : it is the force with which the earth attracts the body towards its
centre and changes with respect to location and orientation. ( function of
g)
• Space : it is defined as the geometric region occupied by a body whose
position is described by linear and angular measurements with respect to
coordinate system.
• Time : it is measure of the succession of events
• Force: a force may be defined as an action in the form of push or pull
exerted by one body on another body.
• Inertia : the resistance offered by a matter to any change of its state of
motion is called inertia

effects of force through Newton's law
of mechanics
1a. Newton’s law of gravitation
• Newton's law of universal gravitation states
that every particle attracts every other
particle in the universe with a force which is
directly proportional to the product of their
masses and inversely proportional to the
square of the distance between their centers.
Ways of finding the unknown forces
LAMIS THEOREM (3concurrent
forces)
• Lami's theorem states that if three forces acting
at a point are in equilibrium, each force
is proportional to the sine of the angle between
the other two forces. Consider threeforces A, B, C
acting on a particle or rigid body making angles
α, β and γ with each other.
Ways of finding the unknown forces
parallelogram law of forces 2 forces
Ways of finding the unknown forces
triangular law of forces 2 forces
• If two forces acting at a point are represented
in magnitude and direction by the two
adjacent sides of a triangle taken in order,
then the closing side of the triangle taken in
the reversed order represents the resultant of
the forces in magnitude and direction.
