V Backlight
Form of an illumination used in LCDs
Used to illuminate from the back of the display
panel
Used in small displays to increase the readability
in low light conditions
Also used in monitors and LCD TV·s to produce
light similar to a CRT display
V ›dge-lit
However to create super thin TV·s,
there was need to eliminate the extra
layer of L›Ds i.e. backlighting L›Ds
L›Ds are affixed to all four sides of
the TV and light is projected inwards
to the centre of the TV via lightguides
These are commonly known as
edge-lit L›D based LCDs

So what are you waiting for ???
L›D TV·s are waiting in the market to
be bought to your home.

screens
?
V Fully electric TV was perfected
V Comparatively smaller than previous era TV·s

?
V TV·s started looking like now-a-days TV·s
V ›ven color TV·s came into existence

?
V TV·s become a lot popular
V Home video recorders were created
V TV·s become a popular part of home

?
V TV·s started looking like what they are now

become very popular in early 1990·s
V In 1997, Pioneer introduced the first plasma
TV
?
V Having a TV was now cool !!!
V Plasmas, LCDs, HDTVs and so on «
V LCD TV·s had become the mainstream
V They covered 50% of all TV·s shipped
globally in 2008
V They come in all sizes and shapes i.e. from 12
inch to 108 inch
?
V Sony was the first manufacturer to produce a
commercial L›D-backlight LCD TV
V In addition to RGB L›D backlighting also
introduced the first flat panel monitor to use
edge L›D lighting in 2008

?
V Samsung was the first to coin the term L›D
TV on their 2009 range of Luxia L›D edge-lit
TV
V It also had integrated L›D backlights into 40,
48, 52 and 57 inch versions

?
V A typical OL›D is composed of an emissive
layer, a conductive layer, a substrate, a
anode and cathode terminals

V Schematic of a 2-layer OL›D: 1. Cathode (ï),

2. ›missive Layer, 3. ›mission of radiation, 4.
Conductive Layer, 5. Anode (+)
?
V Was developed at ›astman Kodak
V Production process is a bit expensive than
other techniques
V Display is not flexible
V Molecules commonly used are organo-metal
chelates and conjugated dendrimers
?
V It emits light when connected to an external
voltage source
V The substrate used can be flexible, hence also
known as Flexible OL›Ds (FOL›Ds)
V Typical polymers include poly (p-phenylene
vinylene) and polyflourene
