“interrogativos” in Spanish
Questions are called
“preguntas” or “cuestiones”.
The 5 types of Questions
• Informational
• Choice
• Yes/No
• Rhetorical
• Tag
What are the characteristics or
features of questions and
question words?
• 1. All question words have
accents when used in a
question.
• 2. They are the first word or
first pair words in the question.
• 3. Questions must be set off
by two ¿?, one at the start
inverted and the other at the
end.
• 4. Generally the subject
follows verb in question.
Reverses in answer.
• 5. Yes and no questions start
with verb and have answer
there.
• 6. Choice questions use “o”
and have answer there.
• 7. Informational
question
requires that
the “short
answer”
replace the
question word.
• 8. If you are
involved in the
question, the
verb changes
from the
question to the
answer.
• In other words if any of the
following are heard or seen by
you in a question, they will
change to either the “yo” or
“nosotros” forms.
• Tú, Usted, Ustedes,
“Someone” y tú
• 9. Tag questions are actually
sentences followed by the
words “right” or “aren’t you” in
English. In Spanish the words
“¿verdad?” or “¿no?” are the
words that do this.
• 10. Be careful of words like do,
does, did and will. There are three
things you need to remember
about using them in a question:
• A. they are implied
• B. they tell you position of verb
• C. they tell you tense of the verb
