Safety Introduction

Health and Safety… and YOU!

• Take reasonable care of your own safety and anyone
affected by your actions
• Co-operate with the University on H&S issues
• Attend required training courses.
• Report defects or safety contraventions
Risk Assessment

 Lab rules are based on risk assessment, which is done by

your teachers and lab assistants
 Hazards have been determined and risks have been
evaluated
 Based on the risk controls have been defined to minimise
those risks
 Students will be trained to take protective measures to
minimize the risks
 This training will be done in relevant labs, Workshops
before work/experiments
Potential Threats

 Earthquake
 Fire –
 General

 Equipment Through Short-circuiting

 Injury in Labs equipment
 Chemicals

 Machines
Our Commitment

 World Campaign on Disaster Reduction entitled “Disaster Risk

Reduction Begins at School”, and the Global Knowledge and
Education Platform, etc.
 School safety concerns have also been highlighted in many
recent national and international commitments as,
 Islamabad Declaration on School Safety, May 2008
 Delhi Declaration through 2nd Asian Ministerial Conference
on DRR, Nov 2007
 Bangkok Action Agenda on School Education and Disaster Risk
Reduction, Nov 2007
Emergency Response – Earthquake

 You will feel shocks and also you will hear emergency alarm
 As soon as you feel earthquake shocks, or hear the alarm, leave
the room – don’t waste time in collecting your belongings such
as bag, etc.
 Assembly Areas have been allocated in the campus
 Move to the nearest Assembly Area
 Leave the area when announced
 There are drill on regular basis – behave like you are in actual
emergency – return to your classes when emergency drill is over

Don’t Panic
Safety against Fire

 Fire safety is through

 Joint Efforts
 Joint Responsibility
Sources of Fire in University

 Short circuit in electrical wires

 Gases used in welding shop
 Other conventional sources, such as stationary in office and
stores.
Fire Prevention

 Check the lab/ workshop for any potential hazard of fire

such as:
 Short circuiting possibility
 No open wires,
 We should know, equipment breaker location to switch-
off equipment in case of chattering/fire.
 Oil spill, or anything which can cause fire, etc.
Report immediately to Lab Staff, Workshop Staff,
University Staff or any faculty member
If You Discover Fire

 Leave that place

 Inform any staff of University
 Follow the instruction on the next slide
In the Event of Fire

 Fire Alarm will Ring

 Do Not Run
 Follow the Exit Signs
 Go to Your ASSEMBLY POINT USING NEAREST FIRE EXIT
 DO NOT go back for personal belongings
 DO NOT re-enter building till advised to do so

ASSEMBLY
POINT
General Laboratory and
Workshop Safety
Summary of the Main Factors
Why does it matter?

 Safe working protects:

 Students and their colleagues
 Other lab workers and
 The work itself
 This is a legal requirement
 The regulations require to perform Risk
Assessment and adopt measure accordingly
Control Measures
1. Enclose the process (For example, Fume hood)
2. Ensure good general ventilation
3. Safe systems of work
4. Reduce exposure times, increase distance,
reduce volumes
5. Personal protective equipment (as a last resort
for primary protection)
6. Wear the clothing and protective wear
identified in your risk assessment Report any abnormal smell
7. Don’t wear sandals or open shoes or noise to respective Lab
8. Long hair must be tied back In-charge, or Lab Staff
Laboratory/Workshop hygiene

 Never eat, drink or smoke in a

laboratory or Workshop
 Never apply cosmetics
 Never touch your face, mouth or
eyes
 Never suck pens or chew pencils
 Always wash your hands before you
leave and especially before eating
What are the general hazards in a laboratory?

 Fire
 Breakage of glassware
 Sharps
 Spillages
 Pressure equipment & gas cylinders
 Extremes of heat & cold
 Chemical hazards

And we have to learn specific measures to combat the

situation – Specific Lab/Workshop Rules
General Tidiness

 Keep your workplace tidy

 Clear up waste, deal with washing
up and put things away as you
finish with them

Make sure everything is safe before
you leave things unattended
A tidy laboratory avoids accidents
to everyone
X
Operation of Equipment

 Never use any equipment unless you

are trained & have been authorised to
do so
 Learn and Understand Safety Signs
Waste Materials

 Part of your risk assessment will be to

determine how to dispose of waste lab and
Workshop materials safely
 Do not put materials down the drain or in
with normal waste unless authorised to do so
When in doubt – ASK!!!

 Do not carry out a new or

unfamiliar procedure until
you have been fully trained &
understand the precautions
necessary for safe working
 DO NOT GUESS!!!!
