Introduction • Nuclear energy is a rare form of energy. It is the energy stored in the nucleus of an atom. After we bombard the nucleus into two parts, two different elements are formed along with the emission of high energy. The process generally followed is called fission. There is another reaction called fusion, which produces almost one tenth of the energy as produced during fission. Fission is the chain reaction which needs uranium-235. The nuclear energy is considered as the worthiest alternative source of energy after fossil fuels. • Nuclear fission is the process of splitting a nucleus into nuclei with smaller masses. • Fission means “to divide”. • Remember that fission has 2 s’s, therefore it splits into TWO parts. • Nuclear fusion is the combining of two nuclei with low masses to form one nucleus of larger mass. • Nuclear fusion reactions are also called thermonuclear reactions. • The generation of electricity through nuclear energy reduces the amount of energy generated from fossil fuels (coal and oils), los use of fossil fuels means lowering greenhouse gas emissions. • Another advantages is the required amount of fuel. Less fuel offers more energy. It represents a significant save on raw materials but also in a transport handling and extraction of nuclear fuel. The cost of nuclear fuel cover all uranium) is 20% of the cost of energy generated production of electrical energy is continuous. A nuclear power plant is generated electrical energy for almost 90% of annual time. • One of the main disadvantages is the difficult in the management of nuclear waste. It takes many years to eliminate its radioactivity and risks • Nuclear power have a limited life the investment for the construction of a nuclear power plant is very high and must be recovered as soon as possible so it raises the cost of electricity generated. In other words the energy generated is cheap compared to the cost of fuel. But the recovery of its construction is much more expensive. • Terrorist use it to effect the world. Although nuclear technology is mainly used for the production of electricity in nuclear power plants, this is not the only utility that can be given. This type of energy appears in many others aspects of our everyday life and in science. If you work with different isotopes of the same element, it’s possible to use nuclear technology for other applications in different fields: • Every third patient who visit a hospital in an any type nuclear medicine procedure. Radiopharmaceuticals, and radiation therapy techniques for the treatment of malignant tumours, teletherapy for cancer treatment or radiation biology to sterilize medical products are used. • The applications of isotopes in agriculture has led to increased agriculture production in less countries. • Nuclear technology is useful in controlling insects pest, the best use of water resources, improved crop varieties or in the establishment of the conditions to optimize the of efficiency of fertilizers and water.
