79th ARAW NG DABAW
Introduction
Davao City — Weeklong celebrations for the 79th Araw ng Davao start today
with this major Mindanao metropolis expecting thousands of tourists and
visitors, and the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) going on high alert status.
The Davao Association of Hotels and Restaurants has already recorded a
huge increase in hotel bookings and said that it expects all hotels here to be
fully-booked before the festivities end on March 16.
About 2,000 policemen and auxiliary security groups have already been
deployed all over the city while checkpoints have been set up at all entry and
exit points to ensure security of both residents and revelers.
James Zimmerman, head of the Araw ng Davao committee said politicians will
be allowed to join the celebrations, but noted that, save for Davao City Mayor
Rodrigo Duterte, no other presidential bet has coordinated with them to join
the Araw ng Davao festivities. On the culmination of the Araw ng Davao on
March 16, some 300 parade contingents will troop to the main districts that
Local historians of Davao claim that the word
davao came from the phonetic blending of the word
of three Bagobo subgroups when referring to Davao
River, an essential waterway which empties itself
into Davao Gulf near the city. The aboriginal Obos
who inhabit the hinterlands of the region called the
river, Davoh; the Clatta or Guiangans called it
Duhwow, or Davau, and the Tagabawa Bagobos,
Dabu. To the Obos, the word davoh also means a
place "beyond the high grounds", alluding to the
settlements located at the mouth of Davao River
which were surrounded by high rolling hills. When
asked where they were going, the usual reply is
davoh, while pointing towards the direction of the
town.
