JOHN:

THE WITNESS OF LOVE

1 John 3:1, 14-18, 4:9-10
1) JOHN WITNESSED ABOUT GOD’S
LOVE FOR US
• 1 John 3:1a
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us,…”
1) JOHN WITNESSED ABOUT GOD’S
LOVE FOR US
• John learned about love
• He wanted the Lord to call down fire on a Samaritan city
(Luke 9:51-56)

• He observed the Lord’s love for the woman at the well

(John 4:1-30)

• He witnessed the Lord’s love for the woman taken in

adultery (John 8:1-12)
2) JOHN WITNESSED ABOUT OUR
LOVE FOR OTHERS
• 1 John 3:14-18
14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love

each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death. 15 Anyone who
hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer
has eternal life residing in him.
16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for

us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 If
anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but
has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that
person? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with
actions and in truth.
3) JOHN WITNESSED ABOUT THE
GREATEST EXAMPLE OF LOVE
• 1 John 4:9-10
9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one

and only Son into the world that we might live through
him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved
us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 1
3) JOHN WITNESSED ABOUT THE
GREATEST EXAMPLE OF LOVE
• The CROSS is the greatest example of God’s love
• John 19:25-27
25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister,

Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When

Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he
loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your
son,” 27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that
time on, this disciple took her into his home.
3) JOHN WITNESSED ABOUT THE
GREATEST EXAMPLE OF LOVE
• John 3:16
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only

Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have
eternal life.
3) JOHN WITNESSED ABOUT THE
GREATEST EXAMPLE OF LOVE
• 1 John 4:10
10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved

us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 1
