HUMAN IDENTIFICATION
USING SCLERA RECOGNITION

REVIEW -III
Aim of the project

1. To study the method of human

recognition using sclera.

2. To identify closely individual using

improved techniques with the help vessel patterns present in
sclera.
Sclera as an identification tool
The sclera is the dense connective tissue of the eyeball that forms the "white" of the
eye. It is continuous with the stromal layer of the cornea. The sclera contains unique
vessel patterns .These vessel pattern serves as an identification tool.

It is advantageous due to :

1. The patterns in sclera is unique in every individual

2. The patterns do not change over time, and are still readable

3. It works with contacts and glasses

4. Resistant to false match

MATERIALS REQUIRED:

1. High resolution camera

2. MATLAB software
3. Image processor
4. Line descriptor tool
5. Histogram equaliser

PROCESSES INVOLVED :

1. Capturing of Eye images :

The eye images to be identified and captured using high resolution camera. The set
of test images are captured for identification using their vessel patterns.

MATLAB Software

2. Image processing :
The filters are applied to the grayscale image for the recognition of the sclera in the next
step
3. Sclera recognition :
The grayscale image is used identify the sclera part of the eye using the instruction in
the MATLAB software
4. Sclera segmentation :
The sclera is segmented using glare area detection tool. This glare area tool detects
only the brighten part of the eye i.e. sclera using contrast stretching mechanism and intensity
measurement techniques
5.Vessel pattern recognition:
MATLAB uses Gabor filters to have good
approximations of the vessel patterns by arranging different orientations
and scales .all the filtered images are fused together to generate the
vessel boosted image.

6.Feature Matching
The matching process consists of two types
1. Sclera template registration
2. Sclera template matching

Sclera Template registration

Using the values of line descriptors fitness value of registration are
made. The offset vector is created using the shift offset and randomly
determined scale
Sclera Template matching :

Test templates are registered and matched with the target

templates for matches in the segments and it is calculated using Euclidean
distance between the segment descriptor centre points

Outcome :
The experiment consist of ten classes, 30 distance values are
calculated. Based upon the distance value the authentication has been done.
Testing is done by matching minimum distance value between template
matching.
