Introduction

3
•The paper presents the research done by American
scientists that tells us how bacteria can produce a cement
.
• When these bacteria are injected in sand, they form a
natural layer of cement around each individual grain.
•The fact is that microbial metabolic activities promote
calcite precipitation which acts as binding material.
•Bacillus pasteruii, a common soil bacterium can be
used to induce calcite precipitation.

3
Bacteria as self-healing agent:

4 Principle:-

• The “Bacterial Concrete” can be made by

embedding bacteria in the concrete that are able to
constantly precipitate calcite.
• Bacillus Pasteurii, a common soil bacterium, can
continuously precipitate a new highly impermeable
calcite layer over the surface of an already existing
concrete layer.
• The favorable conditions do not directly exist in a
concrete but have to be created.
4
Mechanisam

As a part of metabolism, B.Pasteruii produces urease

which catalyzes urea to produce CO2 & ammonia,
resulting in an increase of pH in the surroundings ,
leading to the precipitation of (Ca32+) & (CO32-)
as CaCO3.
 Ca2+ + Cell Cell-Ca2+ . . . . (1)
 Cl- + HCO3- + NH3 NH4Cl + CO32- . . (2)
 Cell-Ca2+ + CO32- Cell-CaCO3

7 Evolution of concept

The idea was introduced by Ramakrishnan of South Dakota school of mines and
technology for remediating cracks and fissures in concrete structures by
employing a microbial agency.

Bacterial

concrete
Procedure

 Primarly 12.5g of nutrient broth is added to 500ml conical flas

k contain distilled water.
 It coverd with cotton plug and is made air tight with paper and
rubber band
 It is sterilized using a cooker for about 10-20 minutes
 The solution free from contaminates and solution is clear oran
ge and addition to bacteria
 Later the flask open & extactly 1ml o the bacterium added to t
he flask at a speed of 1500-200 rpm overnight.
 After 24 hrs the solution is whitish yellow turbid solution.

Bacterial concrete
Applications:-

1 This technique is highly recommended for monumental & heritage structu
3
res.

 The use of bacterial concrete lead to substantial savings, especially in steel

reinforced concrete.

 It will also mean durability issues can be tackled in a new and more econo
mical way when designing concrete structures.

 Bacterial concrete is ideal for constructing underground retainers for hazar

dous waste

 For residential buildings traditional repairing of cracks will remain the mo

st economically attractive solution for now.

13
Limitations

 Not more bacteria are known that can be used for calcite precipitation.
 Difficulties in the injection technology of the bacteria into sand.
 Extremely high pH of the concrete (above 12.5) hampers the use of bac
terial cell in MECR technique.
 Controlled environment is necessary.

14
CONCLUSION
 It was found that principle of microbiologically induced calcite precipitation could
be effectively used in reducing the plastic shrinkage cracks in concrete.

 Higher concentrations of bacteria had greater efficiency in remediating the plastic s

hrinkage cracks.
1
 It was found that live5 bacteria had greater efficiency in remediating the plastic shrin
kage cracks than killed bacteria.

 Bio-remediation had greater efficiency in remediating the plastic shrinkage cracks, t

han chemical remediation.

 It increases the compressive strength of treated cube specimens by 12-13% and has
remarkable potential as sealant for concrete cracks.
