Decision making

The responsibility for safety is being placed on those in the industry to set out
and justify their basis for managing the risks.

Examples of problem solving techniques

Analyze the problem – analyzing the problem involves learning as much as

you can about it. It may be necessary to look beyond the obvious, surface
situation, to stretch your imagination and reach for more creative options.
• seek other perspectives
• be flexible in your analysis
• consider various strands of impact
• brainstorm about all possibilities and implications
• research problems for which you lack complete information.

Formulate possible solutions – identify a wide range of possible solutions.

• try to think of all possible solutions
• be creative
• consider similar problems and how you have solved them
Authority and assertiveness

are really very similar. We normally associate authority with the team leader and the
person in charge.
To putting forward your ideas, whether they're right, or wrong. It can come from
competence, knowledge, skill, experience, or just personality.
Meaning of Assertiveness

is the quality of being self-assured and confident without being aggressive.

a form of behavior characterized by a confident declaration or affirmation of a
statement without need of proof; this affirms the person's rights or point of view
without either aggressively threatening the rights of another (assuming a position of
dominance) or submissively permitting another to ignore or deny one's rights or
point of view.
Describe shipboard situation justifying greater assertiveness

An shipboard emergency situation on ship must be handled with confidence and

calmness, for haste decisions and “jumping to conclusions” can make the matters
even worse. Efficient tackling of emergency situations can be achieved by
continuous training and by practical drills onboard vessel. However, it has been
seen that in spite of adequate training, people get panic attacks and eventually do
not do what they should in an emergency situation.
JUDGMENTAL

Is if you say that someone is judgmental, you are critical of them because they
form opinions of people and situations very quickly, when it would be better for
them to wait until they know more about the person or situation.

Explain difference between “reality judgment and value judgment”

an assessment that reveals more about the values of the person making the
assessment than about the reality of what is assessed. value judgment Types:
moralism. judgments about another person's morality.
Type of: assessment, judgment, judgment. the act of judging or assessing a person
or situation or event.

Emergencies and crowd management

Crowd control management is a specific training program that all individuals of a

ship’s crew need to learn. Crowd safety, is not just about trying to merely control the
crowd, it involves using the right kind of communication and effectuating the perfect
leadership skills to manage the crowd. This is why the crowd control safety program
has been recommended by the STCW stipulations.
Describe the most common Shipboard Emergencies

1. Slips and Falls

Slips and falls are one of the most common accidents that occur on ship’s deck.
Slips can easily take place at any moment and likely during an activity on deck.
Falls are most common while working on heights such as on masts, lashing
bridges, hatch covers, cargo holds and working aloft or outboard.

These accidents are not as silly as they sound, as slips and falls cause injuries
ranging from severe physical damage to fatality.
The main reasons for slips and falls are:-
• Slippery deck
• Improper use of catwalks
• Missing grating, railings and stanchions
• Missing warning signs
• Improper personal protective equipment (PPEs) especially safety shoes and
safety harness
• Lack of situational awareness
• Lack of awareness of the job
• Absence of safe job analysis
They can be best avoided by :

• Cleaning up after work and maintaining the deck free from oil and other slippery
substances

• Follow designated catwalks and correct passages on main deck and avoid
shortcuts

• Using proper non-skid safety shoes on deck and use of safety harness while
working on heights

• Safety and situational awareness

• Analyzing the hazards and risks that are associated with the job, and
understanding the nature of possible accidents prior commencing the job
State Leadership Requirement when dealing with a Shipboard
Emergencies

Leadership through Bridge Team Management Leaders (Captains) can create

their own leadership style, according to their own personality, but there are
several common elements to all the leadership styles that help imposing
authority:

Confidence in own taken decisions and actions;

Mistakes acceptance when this is obvious;
Demonstrating respect for others;
Gaining respect through accomplished actions.

Authority onboard a ships can be disrupted if the Captain exerts its power
through:

Forcing respect from the crew members;

Using his position in the scope of threatening;
Refusing collaboration with the rest of the crew;
Interfering excessively in the ship’s onboard activities;
Ignoring Company’s orders and indications.
Describe role of master and management personnel in dealing with
emergency

Responsibilities of the Captain

This is the top maritime job, that of a Master or Captain onboard a cargo or
passenger ship. A Captain is, simply, overall in charge of the entire vessel and the
highest authority at sea. More specifically, he is in charge of safety of the crew, vessel
and cargo. He is charged with ensuring that all international and local laws are
followed properly, and that all management policies are fully complied with.
He is responsible for the navigation and discipline of the crew. In addition, although
the Chief Engineer is directly responsibility for the ship’s machinery or engines, the
‘Chief’ reports to the Captain on all operational matters, and the movement of the
Engines are under the Master’s control.

Consequences of a Captain’s mistakes

If rules are not followed adequately, the consequences can be disastrous. Ships are
routinely detained- at the cost of tens of thousands of dollars a day to the owners- for
non-compliance of international regulations pertaining to safety, security or the
environment.
Oil spills in the event of a leak can result in irreversible damage to the environment,
along with claims of hundreds of millions of dollars. Masters and other officers and
crew are sometimes arrested and criminally convicted for such incidents.
Describe own role in dealing with an emergency

if you become a seafarer and there’s an emergency situation on ship must be handled
with confidence and calmness, for haste decisions and “jumping to conclusions” can
make the matters even worse. Efficient tackling of emergency situations can be
achieved by continuous training and by practical drills onboard vessel. However, it
has been seen that in spite of adequate training, people get panic attacks and
eventually do not do what they should in an emergency situation.
Self awareness personal and professional development

Self-awareness means knowing your values, personality, needs, habits, emotions,

strengths, weaknesses, etc. With a sense of who you are and a vision of the person
you want to become, a plan for professional or personal development can be created.
Describe the opportunities available for personal development

that improve awareness and identity, develop talents and potential, build human
capital and facilitate employability, enhance the quality of life and contribute to the
realization of dreams and aspirations. Personal development takes place over the
course of a person's entire life.
