A Comparative Study between

Proportional Controllers and

Fuzzy Based Controllers on
Temperature Control
LOUIELITO U. FERROLINO
Process Control
Process control plays a crucial role in any manufacturing industry.
In order for any process to perform at its best, the best control mode must be selected.
In this study, PID Controllers ad Fuzzy Logic-based temperature controllers will be compared

CONTROLLER TEMP

WATER TANK

HEATING ELEMENT
PNUEMATIC
VALVE
STEAM
Operation
It is assumed that the volume of water in the plant is constant.
Water will be heated indirectly by steam through a heat exchanger.
Hot steam will flow through the exchanger that is controlled by a pneumatically-operated control
valve.
The controller will manipulate the steam valve.
Temperature is measured and displayed by the transmitter as well as sending the same signal to
the controller.
Proportional Controller
To eliminate cycling, proportional control can be used.
It can stabilize the unstable variable.
There will be an offset or an error. Increasing the proportional gain will reduce the offset.
Fuzzy-Logic Based Controller
Instead of giving a pre-defined setpoint, the temperature control should be kept between two
predefined limits.
Mamdani’s Method
Input variable: temperature to be set between 45 – 50 Celsius
Output variable: Steam Flow
Initial Fuzzy Rules to be implemented
If temp falls below 45 degree Celsius, steam flow valve at 100%
If temp falls 46-47 degree Celsius, steam flow valve at 75%
If temp falls 48-49 degree Celsius, steam flow at 25%
If temp falls 49.5-50 degree Celsius, steam flow at 10%
If temp falls above 50 degrees Celsius, steam flow at 0%
Simulation: P Controller @ Kp = 5
P Controller @ Kp = 10
