INTRODUCTION

 Hyderabad is a fast growing metro city.

 Hyderabad has only 8% of city as roads.
 Every day 600 new vehicles add to Hyderabad roads.
 Vehicle density 723 vehicles / km, second largest in the country.
 Average speed of vehicles is 12kmph in Hyderabad.
 Rs 600 crores loss per annum in Hyderabad due to traffic jams.
Traffic Signal

 Traffic signals are designed to ensure an orderly flow of

traffic, provide an opportunity for pedestrians or vehicles
to cross an intersection and help reduce the number of
conflicts between vehicles entering intersections from
different directions.
Advantages of Traffic Signal

 Provide for orderly movement of traffic.

 Increase traffic-handling capacity of an intersection.
 Reduce frequency and severity of certain types of crashes,
especially right-angle collisions.
 Provide for continuous movement of traffic at a definite speed along
a given route.
 Interrupt heavy traffic at intervals to permit other vehicles or
pedestrians to cross.
Disadvantages of Traffic Signal
Traffic signals are not a solution for all
traffic problems at intersections, and
unwarranted Signals can adversely affect
the safety and efficiency of traffic by
causing one or more of the following:

• Excessive delay.
• Increased traffic congestion, air pollution and gasoline
• consumption;
• Disobedience of signals;
• Increased use of less-adequate streets to avoid traffic signals;
• Increased frequency of crashes, especially rear-end collisions

Geometric features of the Junction

 Location: Bahadurpally cross junction

 Number of legs oat the junction: 4

Leg1: coming from Dulapally
Leg2: coming from Jeedimetla
Leg3: coming from Pragathinagar
Leg4: coming from Gandimaisamma
 Total width of leg1:16 m
 Approaching width of leg 1: 8 m No. Of Lanes = 2

 Total width of leg2: 18 m

 Approaching width of leg2: 8.5 m No. Of Lanes = 2

 Total width of leg3: 9 m

 Approaching width of leg3: 4.5 m No. Of Lanes = 1

 Total width leg4: 18 m

 Approaching width of leg4: 8.5 m No. Of Lanes = 2
Volume study (manually)

 Team members takes up the Bahadhurpally

junction and the vehicular volume is collected
manually.
 Daily morning 3 hours (8am to 11am) and
evening 2 hours (4pm to 6pm) data is
collected.

TRAFFIC VOLUME DATA

The volume data is converted into PCU multiplying the no. Of vehicles
of each mode with its appropriate PCU factor.

 Design volume of leg1 = 358.2 pcu/hr

 Design volume of leg2 = 643.6 pcu/hr
 Design volume of leg3 = 335.2 pcu/hr
 Design volume of leg 4 = 645.3 pcu/hr
Design of traffic signal

 Methods followed are IRC method and Webster method.

Signal parameters
Total optimum time per cycle= 124 secs
Amber time =2 secs
Total lost time per cycle = 12 secs
Effective green time for phase1= 19 secs
Effective green time for phase2= 31 secs
Effective green time for phase3= 30 secs
Effective green time for phase4= 30 secs
RECOMONDATIONS

 Junction improvement is must for the present traffic conditions at

Bahadurpally cross junction.
 Zebra crossing must provide for safe movement of pedestrians.
 With the present traffic volume at Bahadurpally cross junction, there is a
need for widening of roads.
 In bahadurpally cross junction leg4(Pragathinagar road) have only one lane
road to improve the two lane road.
 With the present traffic flow, there is a need for traffic signal installation with
the appropriate cycle time.
 Improper parking in front of Aishwarya Bakery, and opposite to bahadurpally
bus stop so must be taken care to avoid traffic congestion.
 Road management should be done regularly and road condition should be
improved.
