WHAT IS WEB PORTAL?
A Web Portal is a specially designed website which brings
information together from various sources in a uniform way.
 A private location on the internet, accessible with a unique
URL. Unique user name or password.
They can be accessed from multiple platforms like personal
computers, smartphones and other electronic devices.
Examples of early public web portals
were AOL, Excite, Netvibes, iGoogle, MSN, Naver, Lycos, Prod
igy, Indiatimes, Rediff, and Yahoo!. emails, search engines,
Etc.

DIFFERENT FROM WEBSITE?
Personal Login is required in Web Portal, while not in website.
Dynamic Content changes more frequently than proper
websites.
 Website is a public interface while Web Portal is public,
private(intranet etc…)
 Content is generally focused in websites while Web Portal
offers content from diverse sources.
 Web Portal supports the user in multiple task while website
supports the user in specific task.
TYPES OF PORTALS

 vertical portals:
 web portal that focus only on one specific industry ,
domain or vertical. Vertical portals provides tools,
information, Articles , Research and statistics of a
specific industry such as health care, insurance,
automobiles, or food manufacturing.
HORIZONTAL PORTALS

 horizontal portal is a web portal that serves as a


virtual gate to many similar or diverse web
properties. It focus on wide array of interest and
topics. They focus on general audience and try to
present something for everybody. such as science
blogs, online sports channels, news websites, mail
features, calendar apps, etc.
INTRANET PORTAL

 An intranet portal is the gateway that unifies access to enterprise


information and applications on an intranet. It is a tool that helps a
company manage its data, applications, and information more
easily, and through personalized views.
 It is also called ENTERPRISE Portal..
 Intranet Portals (Enterprise Portals) : An enterprise portal known
as corporate portal provides personalized access to an applicable
range of information about a particular company.
KNOWLEDGE PORTALS

 Knowledge portals enhance the efficiency of knowledge


employees by providing easy access to information that is
helpful to them in one or more explicit roles. Knowledge
portals are not only intranet portals since the former are
invented to provide extra functionality such as
sophisticated information discovery services, collaboration
services and a knowledge map.
 Examples .ICSI, ISG, etc.
SEARCH PORTAL

Search portals aggregate results from several results from


several search engines into one page . Here the main focus
is on search.
 Example : Google .com
MEDIA PORTALS

Media portals update users on current news, affairs and


information. Some media portals provide access to local
and foreign TV programs such as soap , operas , sports and
live events.
Yahoo and MSN is one of the examples.
