INTRODUCTION
Sludge is a semi-solid slurry and can be produced as sewage sludge from wastewater
treatment processes .
Sludge is semi-solid material that is produced as a by-product during sewage treatment of
industrial or municipal wastewater.
brick is building material used to make walls, pavements and other elements in masonry
construction.
A brick can be composed of clay-bearing soil, sand, and lime, or concrete materials.
CONCEPTS
The concept of sludge brick is to make bricks with waste material like sludge.
The sludge brick concept was first used in the year 1889.
Thomas Shaw's invention covered the use of sludge as an addition to bricks, tiles, blocks
and other building materials.
Port Elizabeth brickworks in South Africa has been making sludge bricks since 1979.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
LITERATURE REVIEW
Literature pertaining to utilization of dry sludge in brick will be reviewed from published papers in
journals, code practice and standard book to find out the research gap.
DATA COLLECTION
Data will be collected pertaining to available methodologies and applications of dry sludge used in
the brick.
DATA ANALYSIS
Based on the collected data analysis will be made to find out the most suitable methodology that
can be applied for replacement of dry sludge in brick as soil.
It is required to study the compressive strength, water absorption, weight and other aspects as well as
economical as parts in detail inform the stakeholders for maximizing its use.
APPLICATION
SAND
CLAY
LIME
FLY ASH
WATER
DRY SLUDGE
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
Economical Time consuming construction
Hard and durable Cannot be used in high seismic zones
Compressive strength is good enough for
ordinary construction If more sludge material is used than brick
will lose its strength
Due to sludge the cost of bricks becomes
cheap Very Less tensile strength
Highly fire resistant Cleaning brick surfaces is a hard job
Produces less environmental pollution during
manufacturing process
CONCLUSION
