Introduction Criteria GOTS V5.0 Product Protecting Fields to Future of

Label the name Fashion Wool
The Global Organic Textile Standard
(GOTS) is recognized as the worlds
leading processing standard for textile
made from organic fibers.

INTRODUCTION It defines high-level environmental

criteria along the entire organic
textiles supply chain and requires
compliance with social criteria as well.
CRITERIA

 Fibre Production- A textile

product carrying the GOTS label
grade ‘organic’ must contain a
minimum of 95% certified
organic fibers whereas a product
with the label grade ‘made with
organic’ must contain a minimum
of 70% certified organic fibers
 Environmental-All chemical
inputs (e.g. dyes, auxiliaries and
process chemicals) must be
evaluated and meeting basic
requirements on toxicity and
biodegradability/eliminability
CRITERIA(CONTINUED..)

 Technical and Human Toxicity- Technical quality parameters must be met

(rubbing, perspiration, light and washing fastness and shrinkage values).
 Raw materials, intermediates, final textile products as well as accessories
must meet stringent limits regarding unwanted residues.
SOCIAL

 Social criteria based on the key norms of the International Labour

Organization (ILO) must be met by all processors and manufacturers.
They must have a social compliance management with defined elements
in place to ensure that the social criteria can be met.
GOTS V5.0

Released on 1st March 2017, it follows the This version is a result of comprehensive
overall approach of GOTS to define high stakeholder input process in which various
level verifiable environmental criteria organizations with expertise in organic
throughout the entire chain of apparel and production, textile processing, and social
home textiles. criteria.
GETTING PRODUCT LABELLED

The GOTS quality assurance system requires that the entire processing and manufacturing chain (from post-
harvest handling up to sewing, packing and labelling) also B2B traders (traders that sell to other businesses
such as exporters, wholesalers) must participate in the inspection and certification program .

Before final products can be labelled as GOTS certified in order to provide a credible and consistent
product assurance to the end consumer.
PRODUCT LABELLING

 The standard provides for a subdivision into two label-grades:

 Label-grade1: Organic
≥ 95% certified organic fibers, ≤ 5 % non-organic natural or synthetic fibers
 Label-grade2: Made with X% organic
≥ 70% certified organic fibers, ≤ 30 % non-organic fibers, but a maximum of 10% synthetic fibers (respective
25% for socks, leggings and sportswear), as long as the raw materials used are not from certified organic origin, a
sustainable forestry management program or recycled
TYPES
FEES

 In addition to the certification cost each certified entity must pay an annual license fee. The license fee is set at
120 Euro for each facility that is inspected for the certified entity. Irrespective of related sales, this fee also covers
the right to use the GOTS logo on certified textile products. License fees are collected by the Approved Certifier
and transferred to the International Working Group.
PROTECTING THE
NAME

 In order to further protect

GOTS’ credibility, the
authorities at GOTS investigate
and impose sanctions wherever
there is evidence of misleading
use of the GOTS label or
reference to GOTS
certification
The Management, under direction from the Advisory Council of the Global Standard has developed a
complaint procedure to ensure a formalized, timely and effective means of handling and resolving any
complaints raised with regard to :

-Unauthorized, false or misleading use of the GOTS logo or other claims related to GOTS
(certification)

- Failures or omissions in the course of the GOTS certification procedure

- Any other abuses of the GOTS quality assurance or the licensing and labelling system

- Violations against the ownership and other rights of/in the Global Organic Textile Standard

SANCTIONS
 Textile processing results in the often inadequately treated discharge of
toxic chemicals into the air and water, as well as hazardous workplace
situations. We all “live downstream” and share the same water and air,
and workers making products for us deserve our respect.
 GOTS prohibits the use of the kinds of chemicals commonly used in
textile processing that can cause cancer, birth defects and other serious
illnesses. Chemicals, like persistent hormone-disrupting substances, also
FIELDS TO destroy eco-systems and biodiversity on an international scale. GOTS
requires that all dyes and auxiliaries assessed to its strict criteria and
FASHION approved prior to them usage.
FARM

 While an important step in the

right direction, the use of
organic materials alone is not
enough. When using organically
produced materials, farm
workers and environment are
protected.
 When manufactured without
using hazardous chemicals,
factory workers and the
environment are protected.
When there are no harmful
residues in the end product,
consumers are protected.
FACTORY
 Workers are not exposed to
toxic chemicals when working
with GOTS-certified fields and
factories. In addition, the GOTS
social criteria are based on the
International Labor Organization
(ILO) key features which include
a ban on child and forced labor
and include provisions such as
having systems in place to prove
they are addressing social
concerns, such as grievances.
Furthermore, GOTS requires fire
prevention training and
evacuation drills.
GOTS AND FUTURE OF WOOL

 Organic cotton is the most important fibre in

fashion, apparel, household and personal care
products. Organic wool provides a growing
opportunity. There is increasing consumer interest
in and awareness of sustainable, ethical, and
environmentally sound processing in the textile and
fashion value chain. Organic sheep and wool
production represents an opportunity for growth
in the global wool sector that responds to this
interest. There is increasing consumer interest in

FUTURE (CONTINUED..)

 Organic sheep production provides a good-practice

example of a sustainable and animal welfare-friendly
system. On-farm, specific challenges relate to the
implementation of the organic system with regard
to veterinary management and feeding according to
established organic standards
 GOTS provides detailed processing standards that
can contribute to environmental protection during
the processing of wool. With new techniques for
processing that can further reduce the
environmental impact, the future prospects are
good for the production of wool products for
fashion, apparel, baby wear and home textile
products.
