Services Landscape - Power Transmission Sector
SWOT – Analysis

Strengths Weakness
•Cautious in adoption in new technologies
• Strong Technology adoptability •Manpower cost in India is very low
• High business potential •Un-organized market place
• High volume transmission network •Customer does not differentiate between 90% - 100%
( 25000 ckt KM of 765 kV network) •Data analysis in the power O&M segment has not gathered
momentum

SW  The value addition has not been established yet

OT
Opportunities
Threats
• Very big market place (Including rural area)
• Many players with lot of variants • High growth potential
• Lower entry barrier & driven on pricing • Data analytics and decision making gaining momentum
• Need to grow faster than the market and competition • Compulsions increasing on service providers to be efficient
• Customer does not differentiate between 90% and 100% • Safety , disaster management are becoming important
• Longer sales cycle for total/larger projects • Compliance becoming important
• Authenticity of the data captured through manual processes
Our Observations – market place

 Digital O & M as a theme is evolving

 Analytics has started gathering momentum.
 Highly unstructured data capturing processes
 Current practises are focussed on data collection only. Data storage, analysis and decision making is yet
to be institutionalised.
 Bigger scope on asset management – Data capturing - Analysis
 Aerial can not replace Manual Line patrolling completely.
 Only those customers whose network is very big will invest in Aerial survey of network
 For small guys, the cost will not be efficient. Not feasible and may not be required
 State transmission utilities are under a necessity to improve the availability beyond the normative
 Power Grid experiment is awaited to go to the next level.
Opportunity in Aerial to address

 765 kV Network - Cant be covered from the ground. Aerial scanning requirement is justified.
 India has around 90 Nos, 765 kV lines with around 25 – 30k Ckt Kms
 One time, Measurement of Sag and ground clearance during installation is a must ( Lidar) along
with Line Signature Analysis.
 Is a hygiene which justifies the expenditure
 Very cumbersome for the whole line to do manually
 Time is a constraint to do manual exercise.
 Line cross over analysis
 Compliance

 Vegetation processing

 Highly unorganised sources of data

 Authenticity of data

Customers to focus

 PGCIL is leading. The large network Txn Cos will follow Viz – UPPTCL
 80 – 765 kV lines @ 22000 ckt KM

 ESSEL Infra – Another lower hanging . Intends to outsource all activities for a cost

 Sterlite  Tried hard with Shapers Shape during 2015

 Experimenting with AAM
 Exploring themselves by hiring helicopters and equipment

 Maharashtra ( MSETCL)

 Uttar Pradesh ( UPPTCL )

been our profession in more
than 25 years.
S  Has operated in India for
PGCIL

SWEDEN
Why Collaboration ?

 Recently, PGCIL stated “They have not got the desired benefits out of the Aerial experiment”

 Reasons - AAM Lost

a. Between AAM & Pinnacle, there was lack knowledge of
- India Power Transmission network and challenges
- PGCIL as an organisation and people
- What PGCIL actually wanted !
(They might have delivered as per the tender requisite)

 Pricing
a. The customer needs help
b. Require a story and a formulae

 What next ?
a. Secure the next 15,000 KM Aerial Tender (PGCIL)
b. Create new opportunities
