Each Speech Purpose and each Speech

Context require different Communicative
Strategies. When people communicate
with others for a specific purpose in a
specific context, they use various
strategies to achieve their purpose.
 You are currently experiencing
heartbreak. How are you going to
share it with a very close friend?
 Your teacher noticed that you are
experiencing depression but does not know
that it is because of heartbreak. She then
accompanied you to the guidance
counselor. How will you share your problem
with the guidance counselor?
 One of your classmates noticed that
you are preoccupied with something.
How are you going to share your
problem with a concerned classmate?
1 INTIMATE
is a non-public speech style that
uses private vocabulary and
includes nonverbal messages

This style is used in conversations
between people who are very close
and know each other.

- Telling your problems/secrets to
your sibling.
- Asking your family for pieces of
advice about school matters.
 CASUAL 2
It is usually used among friends and
acquaintances that have something to
share and require background
information.
2 CASUAL
It is a free style speech.

The language used is general.

The vocabulary used is colloquial.
“dude” “I’m doin’ it my way!”
“hey” “Watcha ganna do?”
“What’s up?” “nope”
3 CONSULTATIVE
is opposite to intimate style
because this style is used precisely
among people who do not share
common experiences or meaning

It usually happens between a
professional and his/her clients.
Examples:
Classroom Doctor visit
Small group
4 FORMAL
is used only for imparting
information

The sentences are well-structured,
logically arranged, and strongly
coherent.

It uses formal words and
expressions.
Examples: Job Interviews
Academic papers
 FROZEN 5
is a style whose quality is constant,
ceremonial and may even be ancient

is used generally in a very
formal setting for respectful situation.
Does not require any feedback
from the audience.
