LEADERS CHALLENGE THE PROCESS
LEARNING OBJECTIVES

• Create meaningful strategies for effectively

solving problems

• Examine the role of consequences in problem-

solving and decision-making.
THINK PAIR AND SHARE
ACTIVITY 1
Draw nine dots in the shape of a box (see below), you have to connect the dots
using only four straight lines that go through the middle of each dot without
picking up the tip of your pencil. You may start from any point, but once the
first line is drawn you should not lift your pencil.
What are the pros and cons of “staying in the lines” and how
this applies to leadership. It explains that sometimes we have
to look outside of the “norm” to find a solution or address an
issue. We might have to involve other perspectives and “think
outside the box” and challenge what has traditionally been
tried to find a more meaningful and workable solution.

Write about the two challenges faced by the leaders of UAE in the earlier years.
“Happiness and positivity are a lifestyle and government’s commitment and a true spirit
that unites the Emirati community.” –Comment on this quote by relating with one of our
Pillars of UAE Vision 2021.

You have been selected to lead a team of fellow students in a community service project. All the
other members express concern about the project itself, their ability to complete it, what they
are supposed to do, and even your ability to lead them. Analyze the scenario by keeping in mind
the consequences of the project you are going to lead.

National Programme for Happiness and Positivity

Under the pillar of Cohesive Society and Preserved Identity of National Agenda, the UAE Government aims to make the country
amongst the top five happiest countries in the world by 2021. On 7 March 2016, H. H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al
Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai reviewed National Programme for Happiness and
Positivity presented by Her Excellency Ohood bint Khalfan Al Roumi.
The programme covers three areas:
• inclusion of happiness in the policies, programmes and services of all government bodies and at work
• promotion of positivity and happiness as a lifestyle in the community
• development of benchmarks and tools to measure happiness.
The programme will include Emiratis as well as expatriate residents and visitors. It seeks to encourage government and private
sectors to launch, recommend and adopt initiatives in that regard.
Some of the initiatives are:
• Appointing CEOs for happiness and positivity at all government bodies
• Establishing councils for happiness and positivity at federal entities
• Allocating time for happiness-related programmes and activities at the federal government
• Establishing offices for happiness and positivity
• Transforming customer service centres into customer happiness centres
• Allocating time in federal entities for happiness-related programmes and activities
These activities aim at instilling happiness and positivity culture inside the federal government entity or outside to ensure
community happiness.
