BOYLE’S LAW

states that the volume of a

sample of gas changes inversely
with pressure of the gas as long as
the temperature and the amount of
gas remain constant
CHARLES’ LAW

states that at constant pressure,

the volume of a fixed amount of
gas is directly proportional to the
Kelvin (K) temperature.
GAY-LUSSAC’S LAW
states that at constant
volume, the pressure of a fixed
amount of gas is directly
proportional to the absolute
temperature.
If these laws are
combined together….

COMBINED
GAS LAW
At the end of this lesson, you should be
able to:
1. Explain the relationship among
temperature,pressure and volume of
fixed amount of gases; and
2. Realize the importance of applying
the concept of Combined Gas Law in
everyday life;
Activity 2
COMBINED
GAS LAW
Objective:
Determine the
relationship among
temperature, pressure
and volume of fixed
amount of gases
Materials:

 Cylindricalcontainer with cover

 Liquid dropper
 Denatured alcohol
 Match/candle
CAUTION:

1.Denatured alcohol is
TOXIC. It can cause
blindness! BE CAREFUL!
CAUTION:

2. Denatured alcohol is
FLAMMABLE! Place its
container as far as possible
from your working area.
CAUTION:

3. Immediately wash your

hands with plenty of water
after using denatured
alcohol.
Procedure:
1. Bore a hole near the bottom of your
cylindrical container.
2. Remove the cover of the container
and put 5 drops of denatured
alcohol.
Procedure:
3. Cover the container and hold it in
such a way that your thumb is
covering the hole you made near the
base.
4. Shake the container vigorously for
1 minute.
Procedure:
5. Place the container on the
table. As quickly as possible place
a lighted match/ candle near the
hole. Observe what will happen.
Procedure:

6. If nothing happens, add few

more drops of denatured
alcohol and repeat steps 3-5.
Guide Questions:
1. Why do you need to
shake the container
after putting 5 drops
of denatured alcohol?
Guide Questions:
2. What happens to the
cylindrical container
when a source of heat
is placed near the hole?
Guide Questions:
2. What happens to the
cylindrical container
when a source of heat
is placed near the hole?
Guide Questions:
3. In your notebook, illustrate
what happened to the gas
particles inside the cylindrical
container when a source of heat
is placed near the hole. Support
your illustration with explanation.
Guide Questions:
4. Explain the relationship
among volume, pressure
and temperature of a
fixed amount of gas as
shown in the activity.
Group Presentation:
Group I:
1. Why do you need to shake the container
after putting 5 drops of denatured alcohol?
2. What happened to the cylindrical container
when a source of heat is placed near the
hole? Illustrate what happened to the gas
particles inside the container after they
were heated .
Group Presentation:
Group II:
State the Combined Gas Law to
show the relationship of
temperature, volume and pressure
of fixed amount of gas using your
observations from the activity.
Group Presentation:
Group III:
Give the mathematical
equation for the Combined Gas
Law to show the relationship of the
variables-pressure, volume and
temperature.
Group Presentation:
Group IV:
Relate an event/ phenomenon
similar to what was observed in the
activity to show how the temperature
of a fixed amount of gas affects its
volume and pressure.
Let’s apply the Combined Gas Law….
Sample Problem:
The oxygen tank manufacturer used to
produce 5.0L oxygen tanks at 2000 psi at
25ºC. Statistics suggests that the 3.0L oxygen
tank at 1500 psi more marketable. What
temperature requirement is needed to produce
a 3L oxygen tank at 1500 psi.
According to the Combined
Gas Law, what is the
relationship among
temperature, pressure and
volume of fixed amount of
gases?
COMBINED GAS LAW
states that the pressure and
volume of a gas are inversely
proportional to each other, but
are both directly proportional to
the temperature of that gas.
COMBINED GAS LAW

P1 V 1 = P2 V2
T1 T2
What are the importance of
applying this law to your
everyday life?
