Make an
assessment
schedule
It is important to make an assessment schedule for each
semester. This schedule should include important dates and
timelines for all assessments during the semester. This will
help to ensure that you are aware of all upcoming
assignments and deadlines. This is very important at
university as there is no one to remind you of your
assignments and their importance, it is all self directed.
Complete all
pre - readings
In order to succeed at university it is important to complete all
pre-readings. In doing these pre-readings you should be able
to identify key words and messages. It will ensure that you
have an understanding of what is to be covered in the
lecture. This should mean that you are able to get more out
of the lecture as you understand the content being covered
further reinforcing the information. It will also give you
opportunities to compile any questions you have giving you
the opportunity to ask the lecturer these queries.
Continuous
revision
While it is important to stay on top of the content in the
present it is also important to revise on content covered in
previous weeks. Revision of previous content every few
weeks will help to cement the information in to your long
term memory. Doing this will also help you to pick up on any
things that you may be unsure about and need help with.
Ask for help as
soon as
possible
Asking for help as soon as possible is an important thing to
do in order to succeed at university. If you don't understand a
concept or any information that has been covered in a tutorial
or workshop it is important that you as for help as soon as
possible. Whether this person be the lecturer or a peer.
Asking for clarification on concepts is important as it will help
you have a good understanding of the content covered. If you
leave asking for help too late and dwell on the concepts that
you don't know you may fall behind. Therefore it is important
to ask early in order to stay on track and up to date.
Maintain
balance in your
life
While work and study is the main focus of university it is
also important to maintain a balance in your life. This
means also making time for family, friends, exercise and
yourself. It is important to maintain a balance between
your school work as well as these things as they also
play an important part into your success at university.
Maintaining a balance will help to keep you in a good
mental space which is paramount if to avoid mental
barriers such as procrastination and stress.
DON'TS
Leave things
till the last
minute
Leaving things till the last minute is an important thing
not to do at university. Leaving things till the last minute
may mean that you have less or no time to review your
work. This means that your work may have mistakes
that will bring your grade down and give you a grade
that is not an accurate reflection of your knowledge or
understanding of this subject. These are mistakes that
could be avoided if you prepare in advance and don't
leave assignments and study till the last minute.
Miss classes
When you miss classes at university you may miss
important information that was not included in the
recordings or lecture slides. There may be some tips or
useful pieces of information that the lecturer or other
students mention during the lecture that may be
important or helpful for an assignment or exam. Missing
class also means that you miss the opportunity to have
a direct line of communication with the lecturer. This
means that you will not be able to get immediate
answers to any urgent questions you may have.
Not complete
assignments
At university it is important to complete all assignments and
sit all tests and exams. If you do not do these things then it
means that you are automatically loosing marks that
contribute towards your overall grade. All assignments and
tests are important no matter how much they are worth. The
2.5% could be the difference between passing and failing a
course. Therefore no matter what it is important to treat all
tests and assignments as equal and make sure to complete
all of them in order to give yourself the best chance at
success.
Dwell on
mistakes
It is important not to dwell on mistakes or failures at
university. Dwelling on failures in past tests or
assignments is not a good way to learn and grow from
your mistakes. It is important that you understand what
you did wrong and reflect of why you may have gotten it
wrong, but it is important that you pick yourself up
reflect on how you can do better next time. Once each
test and assignment is completed it is in the past. There
is nothing you can do that will change the outcome.
Therefore it is important to move on to the next thing
and put all your focus into succeeding in the present.
Stick to one
learning
strategy
In order to gain an in depth understanding of concepts
and topics it is important to use a variety of learning
strategies. Each course or subject may have a different
way of teaching and testing content. Therefore it is
important to adapt your learning strategies depending
on the subject or content covered. Using only one
learning strategy may mean that you miss important
details or ideas in different courses. Adapting different
learning strategies for different subjects will ensure that
you are maximising your chances of achieving your
goals.
