ATOMS

Matter is made up of atoms.

Atoms have three components

that are charged:

• Protons: Positive charge

• Neutrons: No charge (neutral)
• Electrons: Negative charge
ELECTRONS & ELECTRICITY
Electricity is created when electrons move from one atom to another
in a continues way.
ELECTRIC CIRCUITS
An electric circuit is a path for electricity to flow.
Electricity is ONLY able to flow in COMPLETE circuits.

CIRCUIT COMPONENTS:
CONDUCTORS & INSULATORS
Electrical conductor:
Allows electrons to flow easily.

Metals Water

Electrical Insulator:
Does not allow electrons to flow easily.

Plastic/Rubber Glass Wood

TYPE OF ELECTRIC CIRCUITS

Series circuits:
Electricity flows in
only one circular
path.

Parallel circuits:
Electricity flows in
more than one
circular path.

CIRCUIT DIAGRAMS
A circuit diagrams is a graphical representation of an electric
circuit.

CIRCUIT COMPONENTS AND SYMBOLS:

CHANGING ELECTRIC CIRCUIT DIAGRAMS

What happens if Sofia adds another lamp?

CHANGING ELECTRIC CIRCUIT DIAGRAMS

What happens if she replaces the wire with a shorter one?

CHANGING ELECTRIC CIRCUIT DIAGRAMS

What happens if she replaces the wire with one of the same
length but much thicker?
CHANGING ELECTRIC CIRCUIT DIAGRAMS

What happens if she brakes one lamp?

CHANGING ELECTRIC CIRCUIT DIAGRAMS

What happens if she adds another cell?

CHANGING ELECTRIC CIRCUIT DIAGRAMS
In a series circuit:

1) Adding more lamps/bulbs makes the light get dimmer. Less

lamps/bulbs makes the light get brighter.

2) A longer wire makes the light dimmer. A shorter wire makes

the light brighter.

3) A thinner wire makes the light dimmer. A thicker wire makes

the light brighter.

4) If a lamp/bulb is broken or removed from the circuit it

becomes incomplete because a gap is created. Therefore there
will be no light in any lamp/bulb.
CHANGING ELECTRIC CIRCUIT DIAGRAMS

What happens if I brake or remove one of the lamps/bulbs?

CHANGING ELECTRIC CIRCUIT DIAGRAMS
In a parallel circuit:

1) Adding or removing bulbs DOES NOT AFFECT their brightness.

2) A longer wire makes the light dimmer. A shorter wire makes

the light brighter.

3) A thinner wire makes the light dimmer. A thicker wire makes

the light brighter.

4) If a bulb is broken or removed from the circuit the other bulbs

WILL STILL WORK.
