Passive voice
• Use of Passive
• focus is on the action: My bike was stolen.
• In the example above, the focus is on the fact that my bike was stolen. I do
not know, however, who did it.
• more polite: A mistake was made.
• In this case, I focus on the fact that a mistake was made, but I do not
blame anyone (e.g. You have made a mistake.).

• Subject + finite form of to be + Past Participle
(3rd column of irregular verbs):

• A letter was written.

 Active - Passive
• The Chief Officer checks the cargo.

• The cargo is checked by the CO.

 Examples of passive

• The ship sank while the tugs were towing her

• Prošle je godine ovaj brod prenamijenjen u
kontejnerski brod. Sve su samarice uklonjene s
palube i glavna je paluba pojačana. Dok su se
izvodili radovi, vlasnici su odlučili povećati
brzinu broda, pa je i pogonski stroj
redizajniran. Brod je prošli tjedan predan
vlasnicima.
