TOWARD A SUSTAINABLE SOCIETY
AND WORLD
• Throughout the entire world, humanity is facing a
serious environmental challenge. Part of this
problem is POPULATION INCREASE, which is
greatest in poor societies. But part of the
problem is also high levels of consumption, which
mark rich nations such as those in Europe and
North America. By increasing the planet’s
environmental deficit, our present way of life is
borrowing against the well-being of our children
and their children.
The answer, in principle, is to form an
ecologically sustainable culture, a way
of life that meets the needs of the
present generation without
threatening the environmental legacy
of future generations.
Sustainable depends on the 3
strategies (Maciones, 2002;2010)

1. World needs to bring population

growth under control.
2. Conservation of finite resources.
3. Reducing waste.
FOOD SUSTAINABILITY

• Sustainable food is a combination of

factors including how it is produced,
how it is distributed and how it is
consumed.
FACTORS OF FOOD SUSTAINABILITY

1. Sustainable farming practices.

2. Low environmental impact.
3. Upholding animal welfare.
4. Protection of public health.
5. Good employment.
FOOD SECURITY

exists when all people, at all times,

have physical, social and economic
access to sufficient, safe and nutritious
food which meets their dietary needs
and food preferences for an active and
healthy life.
FOOD INSECURITY

as defined by the United States

Department of Agriculture (USDA) is a
household-level economic and social
condition of limited or uncertain
access to adequate food.
Factors behind Lack of Food & Food
Insecurity

1. Food Distribution
2. Political-Agricultural Practices
3. Environmental Factors
4. Other Economic and Political Resources
Possible Solutions to Food Insecurity

1. Elimination of Poverty
2. Sustainable Agriculture
3. Improving Agricultural Biodiversity
Food Justice

is the idea that food is a basic human

right; food., and the risks and benefits
of the way it is grown and produced,
should be distributed fairly.
Food Sovereignty

is the right of people to define their own food

and agriculture; to protect and regulate
domestic agricultural production and trade in
order to achieve sustainable development
objective; to determine the extent to which
they want to be self-reliant; to restrict the
dumping of the products in their markets.
