■When we experience the love

of parents, we experience
God’s commitment of love for
us through sacraments.
These sacraments are
symbols of fullness of God’s
love for us.
This is the sacrament of new
life; the door of the Church
that welcomes us to the
other sacraments.
■It is called
“enlightenment”
because the baptized
receive Christ, the Light
of the World.
3 MAJOR
HEADINGS OF
BAPTISM
1. NEW LIFE UNION WITH CHRIST
■This mission is biblically developed
in two ways:
–Through the symbol of water and
God’s spirit.
–By sharing in Christ’s baptisms of
His paschal mystery.
STORIES FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT
RELATED TO BAPTISM
■Creation
■Noah
■Abraham’s faith
■Exodus Deliverance of the Israelites from
Egypt through Red Sea. The Red Sea is a
symbol of our deliverance from the slavery
of sin through the baptismal water.
■Prophet Isaiah speaks of the
enduring love of the Holy Ones of
Israel.
■God promised through His prophet
Ezekiel to sprinkle clean water upon
His people to cleanse them and to
give them new heart and spirit.
2. Incorporation into the Church
through the sacrament of faith
■Once we become members of the
Church, we have to proclaim the
Good News of salvation and be
models of Christian values in words
and in deeds.
3. Sharing the divine life.
■We become a “new creation”
sharers with divine Triune God.
■We need to constantly show that we
are faithfully living out the promises
we made during baptism.

Anyone can give baptism as long
as the goal is sincere and that
they recite the Trinitarian formula
used for baptism and water.
TRINITARIAN FORMULA
“(Name of the child), I
baptize you in the name of
the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit.”
THE RITE OF BAPTISM
1. Reception of the Child
■The priest greets everyone and
asks the parents for the child’s
name. He then ask them if they
will accept the responsibility of
raising the child as a faithful
Christian.
■The priest, together with the
parents and godparents, makes
the sign of the cross on the
person/child to be baptized to
indicate that Christ welcomes
her/him.
2. Celebration of God’s Word

■The priest reads a passage


from the Gospel. He tells the
family about the meaning of
Baptism. Then all pray the
Prayers of the Faithful.
■The priest prays the prayer
of exorcism as he anoints
the child with holy oil. This
is to ask the Holy Spirit to
dwell in the child.
3. Celebration of the
Sacraments of Baptism
■The priest bless the water.
■The priest then ask the
parents and godparents to
make a promises and
profession of faith for the child.
SIGNS AND SYMBOLS
1. Godparent is a
representative of the
Christian community who
takes the duty of helping us
grow spirituality.
4. White garment
symbolizes our
transformation in
Christ or changing
into the new way
of life of Jesus.
5. Candle
symbolizes
receiving
Jesus as the
light of the
world.
■Then together, they
recite the Lord’ prayer.
