Communication

By: Zach Heins

Thesis

How do men and women effectively use verbal and

nonverbal in a social and professional environment in
order to communicate their message.
“What is Communication”

Communication seems like a very simple concept, however, it is not simple at all;
in fact, it is very complex. According to JoANN REY, there are three different
aspects of communication: verbal, nonverbal and written communication.
Verbal communication is defined as “using spoken words to communicate a
message”.
Nonverbal communication “includes body language, gestures, facial expressions,
paralinguistic, proxemics, haptics, and even posture. Non-verbal communication
sets the tone of a conversation”
Written communication is defined as “clear expression of ideas in writing;
includes grammar, organization and structure”
So Where did Communication Start?

We can link that the idea of communication to Aristotle's theory on

communication which states that the speaker has the most important
role.
At first glance that does seem correct, however, as time progressed and
communication devolved, we learned that although the speaker plays a
big role in communication there are other more important aspects, such
as nonverbal communication.
“Speech is only 7% of communication, the other
93% is considered nonverbal or body language”

With this being said, this makes the use of nonverbal communication even more
of a necessity. If we are discussing a social environment the “Key to indicating a
desire to initiate a meeting with someone of the opposite sex is eye contact”.
This is an important step because it is the first step to meeting somebody. After,
there are many other techniques that can be used such as a women smiling, or a
man having confidence. Without all of these aspects, effective communication
will be hard to come by between men and women.
“Silent movements can say volumes while ordinary phrases in normal
conversation can take on entirely different meanings in the context
of attraction”

When talking in the context of communication between men and women

there are two different methods. A spat which is “an encounter between
the male and female in a relationship in which there is a verbal exchange
carrying negative connotations which could then adversely affect the
couple by way of deteriorating their desire to communicate with one
another” or a nod which “is used by males in the event that all other
forms of communication fail”. Both of which are used in different
contexts, however, it is a necessity to understand and be able to identity
in the communication between men and women. These silent movements
will help to start conversations and to help enhance the interested of
another person that you are communicating to.
“Communication has always been a vital part
of the work in business organizations”
Communication is a vital aspect to ensuring a successful business. It is
important to practice effective communication skills such as “Encoding…
decoding… the receiver responds… and feedback”
Encoding is the first step to communication and is used to send a
message to a receiver.
Decoding is the second step and is used by the receiver to try to break down and
understand the message which the sender is attempting to convey
Feedback is the last step and occurs when the receiver responds to the message
that the sender is communicating.

Each of these methods are equally important when

gaining a 100% transfer of a message. These steps come
in to play especially during professional communication.
This happens because if a message is not clearly
conveyed then it can have serious repercussions to both
the sender, receiver or the overall business.
Conclusion

In conclusion, the development of commination has progressed from

Aristotle's Theory on Communication, to a more modern practice. There
are three forms of communication: Nonverbal, verbal and written
communication. All of which are important, however, some out way
others. Finally, identifying and practicing different techniques that were
talked about throughout this infographic will help boost your
communication between men and women in a professional or social
aspect.
