What is an Illusion?

Noun.
• A thing that is or is likely to be wrongly perceived or
interpreted by the senses.
• False Appearance, Idea or Belief

• Professional Italian Make up Artist
• Uses his own body as his canvas
• Has been working on celebrities makeup for 18 years
• Started creating an optical illusion in making mind boggling looks and features in 2014
• He started off by just using his own hands to create away for the audience to think a part of his body is
missing or has a creature attached to it
• Since then, he started creating ways to making dramatically surreal structural images that are quite
astonishing since they look real
• Located in Vancouver, Canada
• Professional Make up Artist
• Former preschool Teacher
• Suffers from Sleep paralysis
• Her work is inspired by what she sees in these paralysis’s
• She creates ways to make optical illusions based on the “patterns and textures” of the things around her
• Mimi is inspired by artists such as Salvador Dali (Surrealist Painter) & Photoshop work
• Although, she does do weddings, bridal showers and such, she prefers to do optical illusions on her
projects
• Her work is incredible, you have to look at a few times in order to see that it isn’t real or photoshopped

•Make sure the image is facing forward, or a little up or a little
downward
• If you would like to have the image going sideward, or all the way
down, or all the way up, you certainly can!
****BUT, it might not turn out as well and be a little more difficult

Lesson Title: Creating an Illusion using Photoshop
Grade Level: 12th grade
Time Frame (# of days): 2 weeks

ENDURING IDEA: Illusion

How can we apply this to art?

What can we create using our illusions?

Lesson Objectives (list 3-5 measurable objectives):


1. Students can explore the values of Photoshop
2. Students shall explore the tools and opportunities in photoshop
3. Students can explore the different opportunities of using photoshop vs. non-computerized art

Assessment Evidence (for example, what will you collect?):


Photos of each work will be uploaded to each students FolioTech account and works will be shown on a slide show

Levels & criteria for each piece of evidence:


Exemplary – Student listened intently to instructions and did not talk over the teacher and was able to create
something inspired with a clear and present concept of illusion.
Essential – Student understood the basic workings of the project and managed to create related to the topic of illusion
Partial – Student did not show interest in the project and could not produce an engaged work with any clear concepts.
Purpose (or Objective):
For the students to be introduced to working with adobe photoshop on a more advanced level using the word illusion

Resources/Materials for Teacher/Students

Cultural Exemplar/Visual:

YouTube video showing a quick example of what we will be creating on photoshop. We will also show a little background
example on artists who also create this kind of artwork

Supplies/Materials:
Computers, photoshop, pad of paper, pencil and eraser

Set-up Procedures
Make sure that everyone has a laptop
Pass out pencils, erasers and sharpeners
Pass out paper for idea sketch

Introduction (or Hook) [approx. __5__ minutes]

Talk about Adobe, do an overview of it, and have them create a practice example after watching the video

All about exploration; encourage students to get creative and make something wild. It doesn’t have to be
representational.

 This project was designed to get more familiar with Photoshop
 To practice something a little different, having them use their imagination
 Having them recap from previous photoshop projects

Class discussion about different techniques used and exploration on individual projects.
