Introduction
 Most of the cities adopted the Underground drainage
system and it is the duty of Municipal Corporation to
maintain cleanliness of the cities.
 If the Drainage maintenance is not proper or the drainage
gets blocked then it will create many problems.
 Problems such as the pure water gets contaminated with
drainage water and infectious diseases may get spread,
traffic jam may happen, the environment becomes dirty.
 This Manhole maintenance by human control is very
difficult because environment is poor and it is difficult to
go inside the manhole for inspecting states of the
manholes.
 Suppose if there should be a facility which would be there
in Municipal corporation that the Officials come to know
immediately after blocking of drainage in which area and
the exact place where it is blocked and it also informs if
the manhole lid is open.
 The above facilities can be provided by monitoring
manholes using sensors. These sensors sends information
via transmitter which is located in that area to the
corresponding managing station.
 Also this model identify the poisonous gas in the manhole
that effect the Manhole Cleaner.
Objective
 The main objective of this project is to keep the city clean,
safety and healthy.
 If the drainage maintenance is not proper it will create
problem for routine life, traffic may get jammed infectious
diseases may get spread and there is a chance of
occurrence of accidents.
 The vital consideration of this design are low cost, low
maintenance, fast development, and high number of
sensors, long life time and high quality of services.
Literature Survey
 Monitoring Smart City Applications using Raspberry
PI Based on IOT
Authors: Prof. S.A.Shaikh 1, Suvarna A. Sonawane.
Description: The Smart city is the development goal to
improve good management and faster development of the
city. Latest facility to implement the concept of smart city
use IOT concept by which easy wireless communication is
possible. The system consist of sensors, collect different
types of data from sensors and transfer to the Raspberry Pi3
controller. The acquired output from the controller is sent to
the control room through the E- mail and also display on the
personal computer.
 Automated IOT for Underground Drainage and
Manhole Monitoring System for Metropolitan Cities.
Author: Muragesh S. K1 and Santhosha Rao
Description: The IoT consists of real life objects,
communication devices attached to sensor networks in order
to provide communication and automated actions between
real world and information world. IoT came into existence
because, without human interaction, computers were able to
access data from objects and devices. Sensor Network is a
key enabler for IoT paradigm. It represents the
implementation and design function of an UDMS for IoT
applications. The proposed model provides a system for
monitoring the water level and atmospheric temperature and
pressure inside a manhole and to check whether a manhole
lid is open.
Problem Identification

 Today’s drainage system is not computerized,. So

whenever there is blockage it is difficult to figure out
exact location of the blockage. Also we don’t get early
alerts of the blockage. Hence detection and repairing of
the blockage becomes so time consuming. It becomes very
inconvenient to handle the situation when pipes are
blocked completely. Due to such failures of drainage line
people face a lot of problems.
Proposed System
 The Proposed system consists of AVR Microcontroller is
heart of the project, drainage level1 detection sensor1,
drainage level2 detection sensor2, dangerous gas detection
sensor, LCD display, GSM modem, Buzzer or alert unit,
DC power supply and mobile phone.
 Various types of sensors are interfaced with AVR
microcontroller in order to make the system smart.
 The particular value is fixed as a threshold value to these
sensors. The threshold value is decided based on the
behavior of the sensor. The value sensed by the sensor is
checked against the threshold value.
 Sensor1 is used to give message as ‘normal level’ and
Sensor2is used to give message as ‘over flow’.
 If the sensor readings exceeds the threshold value the alert
message are sent to the concerned authorities through
GSM. Then buzzer is actuated when the readings exceeds
the threshold value.
 Also this model identify the poisonous gas in the manhole
that effect the Manhole Cleaner, if there is any poisonous
gas the system gives message to the cleaner to take safety
measure before cleaning and provides permission of
cleaning to the cleaner. So that it saves the life of the
Manhole cleaner.
Methodology
 The traditional Drainage Monitoring System failed to
acknowledge in the field of alerting the people about the
gas explosion, increase in the water level. Therefore, we
have used the IoT technology to make Drainage
Monitoring System in a highly automative by using sensor
for detecting and sending alert messages to the authorities,
storing the data in the cloud and displaying the details in
the web browser. Thus, the proposed system helps in
predicting the dangerous situations in Drainage system.
Hardware and Software Requirements
 AVR Microcontroller (Atmega328P)
 Water level detection sensor
 Dangerous gas detection sensor ( MQ-2 gas sensor)
 LCD Display (16x2 display)
 DC Power supply board (requires 5V and 1A)
 Buzzer
 GSM Modem (SIM800)
 Smart phone
 Embedded C
 Arduino software
Advantages & Disadvantages

Advantages
 Wireless Remote Monitoring
 Underground drainage system to keep the city clean
 Low cost and low maintenance
 Fast deployment
 High quality of service
 Long life-time and
 User friendly
Disadvantages
 Weak network
Applications

 Can be used in all metropolitan cities

 Can be used in all underground drainages
 Can be used in all manholes
 Can be used in all chemical factories
 Can be used in all manufacturing industries
 Can be used in all villages
 Can be used in all municipalities or corporations....etc
Expected Outcomes
 Underground monitoring is challenging problem. This
project proposes different methods for monitoring and
managing underground drainage system. Various
parameters like toxic gases, flow and level of water are
being monitored and updated on the internet using the
Internet of Things. This enables the person in-charge to
take the necessary actions regarding the same. Also, real
time update on the internet helps in maintaining the
regularity in drainage check thus avoiding the hazards.
