What is IMS?

 IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) is a new model

defining the control layer of Next Generation
Networks (NGN)

 IMS aims to provide packet-oriented multimedia

services for next generation IP-based mobile
networks

 IMS provides a flexible architecture for the rapid

deployment of innovative features

 With IMS, media control, session control and

application control are separated as distinct entities

 IMS enables users to communicate with video /

The IP Multimedia Subsystem…
– Establishes access independent SIP based multimedia control platform
– Offers wireless presence and IM on standard platform to address threats from wireline ISPs
(MS, AOL, ...)

Controls all SIP based traffic to add value:

– Provides SIP based converged services & multimedia applications
– Provides single-sign-in features to data and real time communication ASPs

IMS Technology Drivers
IMS is a Step Towards a Homogeneous All-IP Architecture

Mobile communications is going IP

• Separation of transport and Mobile Networks
control
• Voice-data integration
• IP-based applications
• End-to-end IP transport
“All-IP
Network”
The Internet is going mobile
• Wireless access
• Terminal and user mobility
• Global roaming and handover Internet
• Quality of Service (QoS)

Summary

 IMS is positioned to be the primary IP network and

service architecture for Tier 1 carriers worldwide
 Most incumbent telecom vendors are now tailoring
products to conform to IMS
 Soft switch makers will compete directly with incumbents
for carrier IMS contracts
 IT vendors will play a critical role in IMS deployment,
possibly at the expense of incumbent vendors  Partner
management will become more important for suppliers of
IMS
 Siemens & Ericsson have the early lead among
incumbents in the race for IMS market share
