Hardware cont…
The VSP is a Fibre Channel and FICON enterprise storage array that scales from a single bay up to a
maximum of 6 bays. The two central bays house what Hitachi is calling Control Chassis(containing
processors, memory, front and backend connectivity…) as well as drive enclosures. The remaining 4
bays can contain only drive enclosures. It can scale from zero (0) drives to a maximum of 2,048 drives

FRONT of the UNIT includes
8 DataCache Adpaters >> 32GB or 64GB Adapters>> Min: 2 (64GB cache) Max: 16 (1024 GB Cache)
4 Virtual Storage Directors blade >> 4 core/blade(min 2 blade, max 8 )
Drive bays have FANs in the front of the unit

BACK of the UNIT includes

8 Front End Directors >> 8 ports/Director(min 2/max 24, installed in

pair, 4Gbps,FC/FICON)

4 Back End Directors >> 4 SAS link/BED(min 0/max 64, 6Gbps)

4 Data Grid Switches

Disk drive enclosure
2.5 inch drives. 2.5 inch drives are
the future of disk drives, and allow
for greater capacity in the same
footprint. For example, a single
frame VSP with a Control Chassis 0
can have 384 drives, each of which
can be 2TB. That’s a lot of capacity
in a relatively small footprint.

Front End Director (FED) Design

So the front end design of the VSP is significantly different
to the design of previous generations and one of the more
technically interesting changes.
At a high level, Hitachi have taken the wide-striping
concept that is now commonplace in backend
architectures, and are bringing it to the front end.
Basically, the FEDs and BEDs (Front End Directors and
Back End Directors) have custom I/O routing ASICs that
are specialized for I/O traffic management – Hitachi are
calling these data accelerator ASICs. These ASICs have
an affinity with ports. However, the more general purpose
CPUs are no longer locked to particular ports, they have
been moved to a processor complex called the Virtual
Storage Director (VSD) where they are pooled and can
have their resources dynamically assigned and un-
assigned from any front or back end port.

VDS - Virtual Storage Director
Virtual Storage Director (The Brains behind the VSP)
* There are 4 Virtual Storage Directors in each system
* Each Virtual Storage Director has 4 Cores
* You can have 16 Cores per system
* These processors manage the internal workings of the VSP along with the LUNs, eLUNs, Addressing, data mapping, virtual
partition manager, operational control data memory.
* You can expand this to 32 Cores using the PCIe Hitachi Data Switch Grid and 3 additional cabinets along with a controllers

Control Memory
* Serves at L2 Cache
* On Virtual Storage Directors
* Responsible for managing and maintaining Metadata, mappings, etc

Data Cache (Global Cache)

* Primarily used as Cache for read/write
* Caches data during read operations from BED, similarly caches data from FED for write operations
* Only write data is mirrored in cache (not all data is mirrored like the VMAX)
* 1024GB of total cache for 2 VSP’s tightly coupled
* Read Operations only require one copy of cached data
* Cache backed up to onboard Flash drive, reducing the amounts of needed batteries

CACHE CACHE

With the R600 and previous generations, MPs were located directly With the R700, the MPs reside on an MP Board, and are independent
on the CHAs and DKAs. of specific responsibilities (in relation to the hardware). All MPs share
responsibility for the operation of the array.
Each MP had specific task sets it had to manage.
The one thing that is divided up for management by each MPB is the
LDEVs for which that MPB has been defined as the owner.

More detail regarding the MPB will be in the MPB slide set.

Backend Director

Each BED has 8 x 6Gbps SAS

paths. That adds up to 32 backend SAS
links per Control Chassis, and 64 x 6Gbps
links in a fully configured unit. SAS runs at
full duplex.(two way communication)
