Finite Element Formulation For Plane Strain isotropic linear
elastic 2D 4 noded quadrilateral element
 Plane strain problem refers to the condition where stress in z
direction is assumed to be constant and the strain along z direction
is assumed to be zero ie no change in z dimensions . A long body
subject to significant lateral forces but very little longitudinal
forces falls under this category of problems The Typical Stresses
and strains are related as shown in the following equationBy
elasticity matrix D
Problem Here An element of length 60mm width 20 mm thickness 5 mm is
restrained at one end and load of 1000N is applied middle of section in
downwards direction
Nodes 18,19,21 are restrained while load is applied at node 2
Average displacement over the nodes(Contour Plot)
Conclusions
 Formulation is accurate enough to solve 3noded 1-D linear elastic element.

 Formulation was done using isoparametric concept so accuracy can be further increased by
using advanced techniques but will increase the computation time. To deal with it Smart
storage techniques can be used

 Since Formulation involved two degree shape function gauss quadrature technique of two
weights is used
