Definition
• Remote sensing is the collection of information about an
object without being in direct physical contact with the
object.
• Remote Sensing is a technology for sampling
electromagnetic radiation to acquire and interpret non-
immediate geospatial data from which to extract
information about features, objects, and classes on the
Earth's land surface, oceans, and atmosphere.

Elements involved in Remote sensing
4
The Electromagnetic (EM) Spectrum
5
Sensors
Passive sensors
•Landsat
•ASTER
•Quickbard
•Ikonos
Active Sensors
•LIDAR
•RADAR
6
Platforms
Platforms are:
•Ground based
•Airborne
•Spaceborne
7
Sensor-platform characteristics
• Spectral resolution = part of the EM spectrum
measured
• Radiometric resolution = smallest differences
in energy that can be measured
• Spatial resolution = smallest unit-area
measured
• Revisit time (temporal resolution) = time
between two successive image acquisitions
over the same area

Advantages Disadvantages
• Covers large areas
• Needs ground verification
• Cost effective • Doesn’t offer details
• Time efficient • Not the best tool for small areas
• Multi-temporal • Needs expert system to extract
• Multi-sensor data
• Multi-spectral
• Overcomes inaccessibility
• Faster extraction of GIS-
ready data
