2 ADDING AND SUBTRACTING

ALGEBRAIC FRACTIONS

 The rules for the addition and subtraction of algebraic fractions are identical
to those used with numerical fractions. We identify the lowest common
denominator (LCD), then write both fractions with this denominator.
 To add two or more fractions we obtain the lowest common denominator
then add
the resulting numerators. 𝑎 𝑏 𝑎+𝑏
+ =
𝑐 𝑐 𝑐

 To subtract two or more fractions we obtain the lowest common

denominator then
subtract the resulting numerators. 𝑎 𝑏 𝑎−𝑏
− =
𝑐 𝑐 𝑐

3 Example

For example :
 a. Adding algebraic fractions
2 6 2+6 8
+ = =
5𝑥 5𝑥 5𝑥 5𝑥
 b. Substracting algebraic fractions
5 1 5−1 4
− = =
3𝑦 3𝑦 3𝑦 3𝑦

We have previously seen how the lowest common denominator of

number fractions is the lowest common multiple of the denominators.
𝑎1 1
For example, when adding + , the lowest common denominator is 6.
𝑐2 3
We use the same method when dealing with algebraic

5 Problem Solving

Rio bought a pizza with cheese topping and divided it into eight and gave it to
three friends. Silvi also buy pizza topped with sausage and divide it into eight and give
half to Rio. So, how many pizzas does Rio have?
Solution :

x = lots of pizza with cheese 5 1

= x+ y ( lowest common denominator of 8 and 2 is 8 )
topping 8 2
y = lots of pizza with sausage 1.5
topping =
1.8
x + 44 .. 12y ( Express denominators in LCD form )
Then
3 8 3 5 5 4
x− x = x − x = x = x+ y ( Simplify the numinators )
8 8 8 8 8 8
and if added to silvi pizza
1 8 4 1 5x+4y
y− y = 𝑦 − y = y = ( Add the numinators )
2 8 8 2 8

Summary

We can conclude that when we will complete the addition and subtraction
algebraic fractions we see first the denominator. If it's the same, we immediately add or
subtract it. But, if the denominator is different, then we equate it first, then we subtract it or
add it up. Or in other words the principle of completing the operation of ordinary fractions
and fractions of algebra is the same. So, step by step how to adding and subtracting
algebraic fraction, first, Multiply the two terms on the bottom to get the same denominator.
Second, Multiply the top number on the first fraction by the bottom number of the second
fraction to get the new top number of the first fraction. Third, Multiply the top number on
the second fraction by the bottom number of the first fraction to get the new top number of
the second fraction. Fourth, Now add/subtract the top numbers and keep the bottom
number so that there is now one fraction. Final, Simplify the fraction if required
