PRESENTATION ON

DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF SUGARECANE

BUD CUTTING MACHINE

Guided by- Dr. S.S.KULKARNI

Introduction
• Need of sugarcane bud cutting machine

1. In today's world, sugarcane accounts for 80% of sugar

produced worldwide.
2. The sugarcane industries just borrow the sugarcane stalks as
a whole from the farmers who actually grows it and is
further processed in a conventional sugar processing
machine without actually separating the planting material
it’s known as Bud.
3. What we actually intend to do is to solve the above-
mentioned problems by creating a machine which will be
employed to separate the bud and the furrow part of the
sugarcane so that they can be used in future for sugar
processing and obtaining the planting material.
PROBLEMS OBSERVED

• Labour
• Cost
• Availability
• Idle cycles
• Congestion
• Safety
• Cutter
DESIGN ALTERNATIVES

• Design 1

Automated bud cutter

Problems observed
• Sensor : To use sensor in such congested machine is not appropriate.
Our product sugarcane releases juice after cutting which may can
damage the sensor.
• Bud Detection : To detect the sugarcane bud with any sensor is mostly
not possible. The length, position and location of each bud is different
for each sugarcane.
• Automatic Feeding : As stated above the shape of every sugarecane is
different and to control its flow and feeding cannot be automated. If
we forcefully apply the pressure we may ended up with broken bud.
• Automation : We don’t need to design a fully automated machines
with sensors , we can achieve semi automatic machine with
mechanical systems.
• Hence we decide to design a mechanical system with different
mechanism.
DESIGN ALTERNATIVE 2
Advantages and disadvantages

 Advantages :
 Cutting process is enhanced with use of follower spring arrangement. Use
of gravity force and fast cutting –slow retardation motion is very effective.
 Construction of this mechanism is compact with less moving parts.
 One motor can worked for two different cutters with equal power
distribution.
 This simple construction can give us high torque .

 Disadvantages:
 Noise of operation is high.
 There are Possibilities of slippage of cams.
 Springs used may get worn out easily due to constant repetitive forces.
 Cam follower assembly cannot resist high speed resulting in low efficiency.
 Vibration produced are high thus cutter life get affected.
DESIGN ALTERNATIVE 3
Advantages

• The mechanism is able to handle high torques and speed without

any fluctuations.
• The machine more compact than any other above designs.
• High torque is obtained.
• Easy to operate and any hard sugarcane can be cut without any
delay.
• Mounting is simple and weight of system is less hence useful for
farmers to operate in farms.
• No idle cycle, each cycle gives a cut.
• Less labour is required. Cost of machine less with semi automation.
• Overall efficiency is more hence price per crop will reduces.
Final design
Specifications

• Mechanism = Slider crank mechanism

• Motor = 1hp 1440 rpm. 3 phase.
• Gearbox = worm and worm wheel.
Ratio = 1:48
• Drive = Chain drive.
• Cutter = Mild steel (2 nos)
• Manual handle is also available.
• Coupling = Star coupling.
Observations

• We observed that the cutter is driven by 30 rpm

obtained from gearbox and it takes 1.96 sec to
complete one stroke.
• For manual cutting it takes 2 sec to complete one
cycle. Although speed depend upon operators skill.
• The above observations are carried on sugarcane of
diameter 37.5.
• Weight of cutting assembly is 8 kg.
conclusion
• The price of machine is sufficiently reduced to 20000
rs.
• The cutting mechanism provided in angle around 30 to
40 degrees which provide weight assistance to cutting
mechanism.
• These machines don’t need heavy foundation or base
hence can be moved easily.
• We have also provided manual operating handle ,
which in case of no electricity can be helpful.
• Operators position and cutting mechanism given an
anthropometrical aspect to reduce operators fatigue.
Future scope
• For maximum production of sugarcane buds this machine
can be designed for conveyor feeding so as to increase the
speed of production.
• Sugarcane bud can be cut by various cutting mechanisms
like rotary, reciprocating or by means of pneumatic or
hydraulics also.
• The fully automated machine can be done which may
consists, automatic bar feeding, bud cutting, placing the
bud into the tray, soil feeling into the tray, and press it
firmly. This can be done in one single unit.
• There is a scope for a agribot in farms, who can do the all
necessary functions of the machine. As the demand for
agricultural work will increase in future.
